Mortal Kombat II Delayed to May 2026; Studio Unveils New Poster

Mortal Kombat fans will have to stick with their video games (and with the franchise’s three already-existing movies) for another nine months. The upcoming Mortal Kombat II, produced by New Line Cinema and distributed by Warner Bros., was originally slated to hit theaters this October. Now, however, its release date has been pushed back to May of next year.

A Brief History of the Franchise

The Mortal Kombat franchise, a martial-arts fantasy series concerning the efforts of its fighting heroes to thwart the world-conquest plans of various evil powers, began in video-game form in 1992. The original Mortal Kombat game gave rise to a plethora of sequels and spin-off games in the subsequent three decades (the first sequel, released in 1993, was called Mortal Kombat II), as well as a number of animated and live-action films.

The first live-action film adaptation of Mortal Kombat was released in 1995 to mixed critical reception but considerable box-office success. The second, 1997’s Mortal Kombat Annihilation, has gone down in history as a spectacular critical and commercial dumpster fire, and it was almost certainly this disaster that caused the live-action film franchise to lie dormant for over two decades afterwards.

In 2021, Warner Bros. rebooted Mortal Kombat with a new film of that name, which was relatively well-received and was a streaming success on HBO Max. Talk of a sequel soon followed; as of May 2024, Mortal Kombat II got a confirmed release date of October 24, 2025. The 2021 film’s director, Simon McQuoid, has returned, and the cast will include Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, and Ludi Lin.

A Sudden Change of Plan

As of August 29, the release of Mortal Kombat II has been postponed by 7 months. On X, the relevant announcement reads: “The tournament demands a new time and place, worthy of its spectacle. Mortal Kombat II – only in theaters May 15, 2026.” Warner Bros.’ exact reasons for deeming October of 2025 so unworthy of their movie’s spectacle remain undisclosed, but certainly, the beginning of summer is a much hotter time of year for such action-packed crowd-pleasers than the month of Halloween.

The Mortal Kombat II trailer released in mid-July was a smash viewing success, making it clear that Mortal Kombat devotees are veritably salivating for the franchise’s next installment. It’s hard to imagine that even a 7-month wait will do anything but whet their cinematic appetites even further. All in all, there’s a strong chance that this temporary disappointment for fans will equate to one big lasting profit for Warner Bros.
