James Gunn Teases Explosive ‘Superman’ Sequel Plot, Eyes April 2026 Start
James Gunn’s Superman was a massive hit with both critics and audiences, so a sequel is inevitable. The sequel is currently titled Man of Tomorrow, and audiences are already guessing what might be in store for the man of steel. Gunn himself is having fun teasing the audience with the possible plot, and perhaps audiences won’t have to wait very long for the sequel, since he’s eying a possible April 2026 start for filming the movie.
James Gunn’s Ideas for Man of Tomorrow Plot

Gunn was a guest on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show, as reported by Hypebeast. He discussed the Superman sequel, stating that:
“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. It’s more complicated than that but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”
Wait, What? Superman Working Together with Lex Luthor??
It may come as a surprise, seeing as how Luthor was his usual maniacal villain self in Superman. However, certain situations can force villains and heroes to work together, such as a common enemy. Since Gunn says there will be a “much, much bigger threat,” it looks like that will be the situation in Man of Tomorrow. Perhaps one of the more powerful villains in the Superman universe such as Brainiac or Darkseid will be threatening the world, forcing Superman to call on Luthor and his super intelligence to help him. It could perhaps reveal layers in Luthor’s character, giving the audience a fresh perspective of the character.
When Will Man of Tomorrow Be Released?
James Gunn is looking to start filming the movie in April of 2026 and is looking at a theatrical release on July 9, 2027. Since 2027 is already packed with massive films such as Star Wars: Starfighter, Avengers: Secret Wars, and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, it should be an awesome year for movie fans. Given how Superman turned out to be exactly what audiences needed in these uncertain times, Man of Tomorrow should help people’s mental health in a similar way. It might even help people have hope for the Lex Luthors in their lives.
