Ian McKellen Teases Epic Gandalf and Frodo Return in Andy Serkis’ LOTR Prequel
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is the anticipated new Lord of the Rings movie directed by Andy Serkis, Gollum himself. Now, fans may have more reasons to be excited, since Gandalf’s actor, Ian McKellen, has now hinted that he might make a return, along with Lord of the Rings protagonist Frodo Baggins.
Ian McKellen’s Possible Return in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum
According to IGN, McKellen was at the Lord of the Rings panel at London’s For the Love of Fantasy convention, along with Frodo’s actor, Elijah Wood. McKellen stated that the next Middle-Earth movie is “going to be directed by Gollum, and it’s all about Gollum,” referring to how Gollum’s actor, Andy Serkis, will be directing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. He went on to deliver a shocking revelation about the film:
“And I’ll tell you two secrets about casting. There’s a character in the movie called Frodo. And there’s another character called Gandalf. And apart from that my lips are sealed.”
What Gandalf and Frodo’s Presence Could Mean for the Movie
It’s not much of a surprise that Ian McKellen’s Gandalf will be in the movie, given that near the beginning of Fellowship of the Ring, he went on a long quest in search of the One Ring’s meaning and then went searching for Gollum afterwards. Since The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be taking place during that time period, it makes sense for us to see Gandalf’s journey that was only hinted at in The Fellowship of the Ring.
However, what would Frodo do? During this time period, Frodo is living peacefully in the Shire, and he and Gollum don’t meet until The Two Towers. Perhaps he will only have a cameo, like he did in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. There is also the fact that Elijah Wood has aged twenty years since the Lord of the Rings trilogy and might have difficulty recapturing Frodo’s youthful aura. Perhaps CGI will be used to alter his face.
When Will The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum Come Out?
The current release date is December 17th, 2027, meaning fans still have to wait a while to see Ian McKellen don the iconic Gandalf robes again. Between The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and Avengers: Secret Wars, December of 2027 will be an exciting time for movie fans. Here’s hoping that Ian McKellen still has that Gandalf majesty.
