Disney Developing Live-Action Movie Of Iconic 90s Villain
Disney is delving into the backstory of one of its most iconic villains, with sources reporting that a live-action movie centered on Gaston from Beauty and the Beast is in early development. The project signals the studio’s continued interest in expanding the narratives of its classic characters, this time focusing on the arrogant hunter who serves as the antagonist to Belle and the Beast.
Disney’s ‘Gaston’: Creative Team and New Direction
Attached to pen the script is Dave Callaham, known for his work on major blockbusters like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Michelle Rejwan, who has a long history with Disney through her production work on Lucasfilm projects like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Obi-Wan Kenobi, is set to produce. While no director is currently attached, the project is described as a completely new and original take on the character.
According to initial reports, this version will not be a continuation of the 2017 live-action film. It is expected to feature a new actor in the titular role and is being developed with “swashbuckling” tones, suggesting an action-adventure focus for the infamous villain.
A New Chapter for a Classic Villain
Gaston first appeared in the 1992 animated classic Beauty and the Beast, quickly becoming a memorable figure for his vanity, charisma, and ultimate cruelty. The character was later portrayed by Luke Evans in the 2017 live-action adaptation, which became a box office sensation. A television series spin-off featuring Evans was previously in development but was ultimately scrapped, paving the way for this new feature film concept.
While plot details remain under wraps, the decision to explore Gaston’s story through a fresh lens indicates that Disney is eager to build out its cinematic universe of classic fairy tales. With a proven writer like Callaham on board, the studio seems intent on giving the popular antagonist a grand, original adventure of his own.
