“Avengers: Doomsday” Directors Explain Why They Brought Steve Back
Many MCU fans consider the “Avengers” movies to be the best within the series. They bring in beloved characters and heroes from past installments for mind-blowing adventures. Though they mostly involve stopping a renowned Marvel Comics antagonist from fulfilling their master plans. So far, there are four “Avengers” films, but there’s another on the way.
“Avengers: Doomsday” is set to premiere in December of this year and feature countless characters. And one of them is Steve Rogers, the original Captain America, played by Chris Evans. However, how is the legendary first Avenger back despite his story’s concrete conclusion? Maybe the directors of this upcoming movie can shed some light on this subject.
Directors Reveal Why Steve Rogers Returns
Steve Rogers appeared throughout the MCU before retiring after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” Since then, other characters from various modern flicks have only mentioned him. But it looks like the star-spangled man is making a surprise return. We recently got a teaser trailer showcasing Steven now happily living a non-Avenger life. And it ended with the renowned “(This character) will return” message.
Simultaneously, the “Doomsday” directors, along with Anthony and Joe Russo, shared the teaser on Instagram. And they included a caption that read, “The character that changed our lives.” It also said, “The story that brought us all here together.” It finished by revealing that this MCU phase was always going to bring Steve back.
Somewhat vague, but they’re alluding to how their MCU careers started with Captain America. And now they’re likely bringing him back since they, too, are returning. Unfortunately, this reveal has left fans questioning whether this is the best decision. Some are even thinking it was brought on by nostalgia rather than for story purposes. Either way, we’ll have to see “Doomsday” to be sure.
Steve Rogers During the “Avengers” Movies
In 2012, Steve appeared in the initial “Avengers” movie alongside other previous MCU characters. SHIELD director Nick Fury brings him on to locate a stolen potential power source. The search leads to Loki, Thor’s brother, as well as to Iron Man and Thor. Initially, he and Tony Stark are at odds due to their morals and personalities. But they and the other heroes pull themselves together to fight Loki and his army.
Steve and the rest of his team returned in 2015 for “Age of Ultron.” They must contend with an AI that Tony created to help them. It goes rogue and plans to destroy humanity, thus saving the world. And it’s got help in the form of a super-powered sibling duo. Luckily, the titular protagonists put up a fight thanks to some allies and recruits.
Following the aftermath of “Captain America: Civil War,” Steve returned in 2018’s “Infinity War.” He joins other heroes in Wakanda to hold back Thanos’ forces. Steve makes his next major appearance in “Endgame” following the Blip. He and the remaining heroes have their showdown with Thanos, and then he retires. Given that, it’ll be interesting to see what he does in “Doomsday” this December.
Fans Have Wait
I initially assumed that Steve Rogers’ return for “Avengers: Doomsday” was false. So, you can only imagine my surprise upon discovering that it was all true. Now, I’m even more excited about this upcoming movie with the star-spangled superhero returning. It’ll also be interesting to see how they explain his inclusion, given his “Endgame” conclusion.
Additionally, I’m glad to see that the Russo Brothers are coming back as well. Their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made some of the most impactful movies. And that means that “Doomsday” is in some of the best hands around. Sadly, we have to wait until December 18 to experience the Russo Brothers’ handiwork.
