Avengers Doomsday: Iron Man 3 Director Makes Bold Statement on Robert Downey Jr’s Dr. Doom Role

Marvel Studios blew fans away by not only confirming that Avengers Doomsday would bring Dr. Doom as the next big villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that Robert Downey Jr would be the actor playing the role. Downey’s return was shocking, considering his climactic conclusion as Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame.

Shane Black Makes Bold Statement for Avengers Doomsday

Let’s be honest here—Marvel Studios has been stumbling around like a drunk superhero trying to find their way home after Avengers Endgame. Between lackluster Phase 4 entries and the whole Kang fiasco that shall not be named, the MCU has been desperately searching for something to reignite the magic. This is where RDJ comes in, being casted as Doom for Avengers Doomsday. Phase 6 could potentially help reignite the MCU’s former glory days.

Shane Black, who directed Iron Man 3 and has worked with Downey Jr. since Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, recently shared his thoughts on RDJ’s surprising return to the MCU. Speaking with ComicBook, Black didn’t hold back his enthusiasm,  “I think he’s going to singlehandedly reinvigorate the entire comic book movie industry with that.”

Why Shane Black Believes RDJ Will Save Comic Book Movies

Black admitted that when the casting was first announced, it felt a bit cynical. Movieweb reported him saying as such,  “I mean, it seemed like at first a cynical idea, you know, ‘Oh, let’s just go back to the well of the one guy that seems to always save us,'” he explained. But here’s the kicker—he genuinely believes it’s going to work. “But it’s going to work. It’s really going to work.” The director’s confidence isn’t just blind faith either.

Black has witnessed Downey’s dedication firsthand, and he knows the actor doesn’t phone in performances. “I’m thrilled because I’m first in line to see that. I haven’t seen all the Marvel movies. I’ll see that one first,” Black added, which honestly says everything about how much he believes in this project. Let’s talk numbers for a hot second, because they’re pretty damning. In the five years since Endgame, only two Marvel movies have crossed the billion-dollar mark: Spider-Man No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine.

Final Thoughts

Shane Black’s confidence in Robert Downey Jr.’s return for Avengers Doomsday might seem like typical Hollywood hyperbole, but the man has a point. Sometimes you need to go backward to move forward, and if anyone can pull off this particular magic trick, it’s probably the guy who launched the entire MCU phenomenon in the first place.

Avengers Doomsday represents more than just another superhero movie—it’s a test of whether Marvel can recapture the lightning in a bottle that made the MCU special. Whether it succeeds or fails, one thing is certain: we’re all going to be watching when it hits theaters, and that’s probably exactly what Marvel is counting on.
