Enemies-to-Lovers Romance: 5 TV Couples That Stole Our Hearts
Will they or won’t they? They can’t stand each other, but then – wait – they like each other. What gives? A huge draw for a lot of television shows is the growing romance between TV couples. Especially couples that have had a rocky start. A multitude of shows featured couples who really couldn’t stand each other, but had to work together. However, with a slow burn type of romance, these sworn “enemies” soon became TV couples, even beloved power couples, on the small screen.
5 TV Couples who Turned Hate into Romance
Whether it’s coworkers, work partners, or even those battling on opposite sides (on the never-ending fight against vampires), we chose five of the most memorable TV couples who built up quite a romance. From intense dislike to immense passion, we listed them here.
“Moonlighting” – Maddie and David
Before long running TV show “Castle,” there was “Moonlighting.” Cybill Shepherd played Maddie, and Bruce Willis was David. The two ran a detective agency and fought like cats and dogs. Viewers would tune in just to see the banter between Maddie and David. Falling in the same vein was “Remington Steele” with Stephanie Zimbalist and Pierce Brosnan.
“Cheers” – Sam and Diane
Although “Cheers” was on for a long time and featured some of showbiz’s funniest and best talent, fans remember the banter between bar manager Sam and aspiring novelist (uh, waitress) Diane. The roles were expertly played by Ted Danson and Shelley Long. The two had some of the absolute best punchlines and takedowns in modern comedic TV history.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” – Spike and Buffy
Apparently, there’s a fine line between loving and killing. It’s hard to choose between the two, and often the line is blurred. Here we have Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Spike (James Marsters) on opposite sides of the battle. Buffy to slay vampires, and Spike to kill the slayers. Inevitably, the two fall for one another, and Spike ultimately joins forces with Buffy.
“Parks and Recreation” – Leslie and Ben
These two ran circles around one another, trying to jam each other up. Leslie, played by Amy Poehler, initially hated Ben, (Adam Scott), and made no bones about it. Leslie was the deputy director (of her department) versus auditor Ben. Needless to say, romance sparks flew, thawing the freeze. Leslie and Ben built a solid relationship, getting engaged in season five.
“Wild Cards” – Max and Ellis
Max does a lot of things well (and quite sneakily), but the one thing she does best is irritate Ellis. We love watching her get him pissed – and out of his comfort zone. TV couple Vanessa Morgan and Giacomo Gianniotti are a lightning rod of a pairing in this fun series. They keep fans invested in the cases they’re cracking – and also in their potential romance. Oh boy.
A Few Last Thoughts
As usual, we have an honorable mention. (Seriously, how could we not?) In a series that has now spanned over decades with the ultimate slow-burn, we want to give a huge shoutout to “The X-Files. Polar opposites Mulder and Scully are just meant to be. We want to believe.
A captivating TV show needs not only (obviously) great storylines but also interesting characters. If it fails to deliver relatable, sympathetic, and enticing stories and characters, then it’s unlikely the show will succeed in staying on air for a long time.
