As revealed by Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat, this legendary feud is not only central to the upcoming film but also essential to its unfolding storylines. While Scorpion may not be fighting alongside the core team against the menacing Shao Kahn, his role remains pivotal. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Boon teased what we can expect from these characters in the sequel.

“He’s certainly making appearances that are significant and necessary for the progress of other storylines. He plays a different role. He’s not part of the ‘Super Friends’ trying to defeat Shao Kahn, but his appearance is key and it is very essential for certain parts.”

What makes Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s rivalry so captivating is the backstory the original film set up for them. Their backstory, filled with tragedy, loss, and transformation, resonates with audiences, leaving fans wanting to see more in Mortal Kombat 2. These two are also some of the oldest characters of the franchise, making them favorites of many longtime fans of the franchise. Given the action sequences in the first movie, it will be fun to see what they do in the sequel.

More New Characters

Mortal Kombat 2 will also introduce new characters and elements from the game, including the feared necromancer Quan Chi and the fierce Princess Kitana, as well as the long-awaited return of the Mortal Kombat tournament itself. Directed by Simon McQuoid with a screenplay by Jeremy Slater, the film boasts a stellar cast, including Karl Urban as Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana. Their performances, alongside returning actors Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, are expected to expand the universe.
