The last chapter in the Mission: Impossible film, series is here for The Final Reckoning! Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt in his final MI film, having done 7 movies with this 8th being his swan song for the series. Everything has led up to this final film for Hunt and his MI crew, and the questions that’s on everyone’s mind is, how will this end for Hunt? How will it end for the world?
What can we expect from this last outing? Each adventure has brought us closer to knowing more about Hunt. We’ve seen him beaten, physically and emotionally. We’ve seen him give up everything for the mission in The Final Reckoning? What more can we see him take?
What Is the Mission?
Final Reckoning picks up 2 months after the events of MI: Dead Reckoning. The world is on the brink of nuclear destruction, which is due to a computer AI program called “The Entity.” Hunt and his team must stop the program and anyone who wants to control it, by any means necessary. Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt along with an all-star cast featuring Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Holt Czerny, Janet McTear, Nick Offerman, Greg Tarzan, Angela Bassett, and more. This cast is so jam-packed, but the movie gives everybody something to do.
The Impossible Stunts
Of course, this being a Mission: Impossible movie, you are expected to see crazy stunts, especially by Cruise himself. I’m not just talking about explosions or even just jumps that we’ve seen in each movie. I’m talking about stunts that will almost take your breath away. One of the most exhilarating stunts happens in the climax of the movie, while Hunt is trying to chase down Gabriel, played by Esai Morales, in the air. It leaves you on the edge of your seat, wondering how anyone would survive being thousands of feet in the air, flying fast.
Another one to talk about The Final Reckoning is when Hunt deep dives to get to a submarine that is almost to the deepest parts of a cold ocean. You do get a breakdown of what would potentially happen to the human body in frozen water as one goes up to the surface. As always, the action sequences are on par with all the other films, and everybody gets their moment, even Simon Pegg’s Benji Dunn gets in a scrap.
Honoring The Past
The one thing The Final Reckoning does and remind you over and over again that everything that Ethan Hunt has done has led to a pivotal moment. We are shown everything that Ethan has been through from the first movie all the way to the last. Even some old characters we haven’t seen in a very long time come back and play a pivotal part. We also learn a lot more about Hunt and how he became an MI agent, and how he might have to deal with someone from the past in the form of a son.
Every moment in The Final Reckoning is almost bittersweet, having been on this long journey, and many adventures with the Hunt, but even everyone seems to their final days. Each relationship is also honored, especially the friendship between Hunt and Luther Stickell, played by Rhames, who has also been in the series since the beginning.
The Final Reckoning
If audiences can take anything away from The Final Reckoning, I would say they are taking the experience of the franchise. With everything we’ve seen Cruise do with these films, it’s nice that we are getting to see an ending for his character, but is this the end for the film series? This is a series that can continue without Hunt. It’s proven, seeing that Mission: Impossible was a television series before it became a movie series, with a sequel series that happened back in 1988. There are many actors out there who would be willing to accept this mission, if they choose to do so, and carry on the mantle of playing an MI: Agent.
