Dosas are a South Indian crepe batter made from rice and black gram. During her speech at the DNC on Wednesday, Kaling recalled the viral video. She started her speech off with a joke, quipping, “For those of you who don’t know me, I am an incredibly famous Gen Z actress who you might recognize from The Office, The Mindy Project, or as the woman who courageously outed Kamala Harris as Indian in an Instagram cooking video. She wasn’t Madam Vice President then. She was my senator.”
Kaling then went on to elaborate how, when she and Harris first met, they initially bonded over the shared loss of their mothers. She stated, “We immediately hit it off. We talked about the love we have for our moms, who had both passed away from cancer. After speaking to Kamala, it was clear to me that Shyamala [Harris’ mother] had passed down the same optimism and fearlessness to her daughter.” Kaling goes on to attribute Harris’ qualities to her late mother, qualities that would undoubtedly make her a great leader.
According to NPR, Mindy Kaling’s mother was an OBGYN, whom she actually based her The Mindy Project character on. The Mindy Project centered on the OBGYNs at a reproductive clinic in Manhattan. Similarly, Harris’ mother was a cancer research scientist. Both women immigrated to the U.S. from South India, making Kaling and Harris second-generation Americans, a commonality they connected over.

Mindy Kaling isn’t the only celebrity showing support for Kamala Harris at the DNC. According to Deadline, musical guests have included Pink, The Chicks, John Legend, Maren Morris, Common, and Patti LaBelle, among others, while influential political officials included speakers such as Joe and Jill Biden, Barack and Michelle Obama, Hillary and Bill Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The convention also featured appearances from other public figures, like actors Kenan Thompson, Eva Longoria, Kerry Washington, and Tony Goldwyn. Washington and Goldwyn’s appearance, in particular, garnered a lot of attention from fans online, as the duo famously played a high-profile political couple on Scandal.
