Miley Cyrus Is Being Sued For Allegedly Ripping Off A Bruno Mars Song

Miley Cyrus

Popstar Miley Cyrus is being sued for copyright infringement over her hit song, “Flowers.” The singer released “Flowers” as the lead single for her eighth studio album, Endless Summer Vacation, which came out in March 2023. Once the song hit the airwaves, many music fans began noticing similarities between Cyrus’s song and Bruno Mars’ 2012 song “When I Was Your Man.” Tempo Music Investments, who owns a percentage of the copyright of Bruno’s song, heard those similarities as well and is now suing Cyrus for infringement.

“Flowers” By Miley Cyrus

Released through Columbia Records in January 2023, Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers” was a tremendous success. The song debuted at the top of the Billboard Charts and spent eight non-consecutive weeks there, becoming the singer’s second number-one hit. It was also the best-selling single of 2023 and became her most successful single worldwide.

Cyrus released released the song on Liam Hemsworth‘s birthday, leading her fans to assume that the song was a diss at him. She also performed the song at the 66th Grammy Awards, and picked up her first Grammy, Record of The Yearfor the song.

According to TMZ, in their lawsuit against Miley Cyrus, Tempo Music Investments claims that there are lyrical, melodic, and harmonic similarities between the chorus of “Flowers” and “When I Was Your Man.” They also argue that Cyrus uses the same chord progression in her song that Mars used in his.

Tempo claims that the similarities are enough to conclude that Miley Cyrus and her team were intentionally copying Bruno Mars, although Mars is not a plaintiff in this lawsuit. Bruno Mars isn’t the sole writer of the song, and his writing partner, Phil Lawrence, sold a portion of his catalog to Tempo, who is now suing Miley. Bruno and his team have not yet commented on the lawsuit.

Fan Reaction

When “Flowers” first dropped, fans of both Cyrus and Mars discussed the similarities between the songs. Mars, however, did not entertain those who tried pitting him against her, instead congratulating her on the song’s success. In fact, he even used the song in an ad of his.

Fans all over social media are discussing the lawsuit. Many don’t seem aware that Mars has nothing to do with the suit, while a handful are surprised Cyrus wasn’t sued for plagiarism already because they noticed the similarities between the songs as soon as “Flowers” was released.

Miley’s Thoughts

According to an article by Cosmopolitan, Cyrus isn’t too worried about the lawsuit itself, but she is terrified to have to confirm the theories that the song was about or inspired by her ex-husband, Liam. A source close to Cyrus, however, told the Daily Mail that she wrote the song as a way to heal.

Conclusion

Miley Cyrus’s 2023 smash hit “Flowers” was meant to be an inside joke and a simple message aimed at Liam Hemsworth, but this lawsuit means that everyone will now hear the singer defending herself from claims of copyright infringement. It’s not ideal that Cyrus, who wrote the song as part of a healing journey, now has to go back to that chapter of her life. She and her many fans will definitely hope this blows over as fast as it can and that the suit gets settled as quickly as possible.
