Florida Man Arrested in 2011 Michelle Parker Disappearance

Orlando police arrested Dale Smith Jr. on a murder charge Wednesday in connection with the 2011 disappearance of his ex-fiancée, Michelle Parker, nearly 15 years after she vanished. Parker was 33 when she went missing on Nov. 17, 2011, and has never been located.

The arrest comes after the Orlando Police Department spent the past year reexamining the case with updated forensic tools, according to CBS News.

What Authorities Announced

Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said Smith Jr. was “the last known person to see or hear from Michelle” on the day she disappeared, after she dropped off their children at his home, according to CBS News. Security video captured Parker dropping the children off that night. Her vehicle turned up abandoned in an Orlando parking lot the following day, and divers recovered her cellphone from a nearby lake in December 2011.

Smith Jr. had been considered a suspect since around that same month in 2011, CBS News reported. Chief Smith said investigators “reexamined testimony and conflicting statements made by the suspect and used advanced digital forensics to uncover and analyze additional evidence,” according to CBS News. A department official identified by CBS News as McMican said Smith Jr. had given different answers to the same questions when asked numerous times over the years.

Advances in forensic technology let investigators take a closer look at vehicles, phones, computers and other devices in ways that were not possible 15 years ago, according to CBS News. That renewed effort turned up new evidence within the last year. Parker still has not been found, but police said all the evidence points to Smith Jr. as responsible for her death. Smith Jr. has not entered a plea, and it is not known whether he has retained an attorney.

What It Means For The Case

The disappearance drew national attention in part because of its unusual timing. The same day Parker vanished, an episode of the reality court show “The People’s Court” aired showing her and Smith Jr. in a dispute over an engagement ring, according to CBS News.

For a case that sat unresolved for nearly a decade and a half, the murder charge represents the most significant development since Parker’s car and phone were recovered in the weeks after she went missing. Background On The Disappearance

Parker was last seen alive dropping off her children at the home of Smith Jr., her ex-fiancé, on the night of Nov. 17, 2011. Her abandoned car was found the next day, and her phone was pulled from a lake roughly a month later. No arrest followed at the time, and the case remained open for years as a presumed homicide without a body.

What’s Next

Smith Jr. has not entered a plea, and it is unclear whether he has retained an attorney. For context on how similar long-running cases have unfolded in court, see coverage of the Matthew Farwell trial in the Sandra Birchmore case.
