Max And The MidKnights Praised For Stunning Stop-Motion Imitation

Max and The MidKnights

Nickelodeon’s newest show, Max And The MidKnights is their latest hit. It follows a 10-year-old girl who dreams of becoming a knight in a crumbling kingdom. This animated program impressed audiences and critics, especially with its unique visual art style.

The Max And The MidKnights Book

The Max And The MidKnights cartoon stems from the graphic novel by Lincoln Pierce. Max is a troubadour-in-training in the Middle Ages, with knights, magicians, and monsters. She performs in various towns with her uncle Budrick, singing and telling stories. In truth, she dreams of becoming a knight rather than a performer like her uncle. Max and Budrick eventually arrive in Byjovia, supposedly ruled by a kindly king. But upon arriving, they discover the merciless King Ghastly rules the townspeople.

Soon, Ghastly takes Budrick away and turns him into the new court jester. He must keep the tyrant entertained, or he’ll lose his head, literally. It’s up to Max to sneak into Ghastly’s castle and free her uncle. Luckily, she is not alone in this endeavor and has her new friends to help. Mumblin the Magician, the wizard who served Byjovia’s past king, also aids in their mission. Eventually, the group discovers the former ruler is still alive, and they must find him.

Nickelodeon’s Animated Series

The Max And The MidKnights animated series follows the formula of its source material. Of course, the cartoon brings some new twists to Max’s adventures. The most obvious is the show being part musical with characters breaking into song. A song will play in the background during an intense action scene. Max And The MidKnights possesses a semi-dark humor similar to the Monty Python movies. There’s also a 3-D effect where characters and objects break from the program’s widescreen ratio.

Max And The MidKnights possesses talented voice actors who bring the show to life. Taking the lead role as Max is Blu del Barrio from Star Trek: Discovery. Saturday Night Live’s Melissa Villaseñor plays the wacky and super-positive Millie. Playing the street-savvy and often sarcastic Simon is Zeno Robinson of Transformers: Earthspark. Lastly, Caleb Yen, known for his voice on Beyblade X, plays the book-loving genius Kevyn. Renowned comedian Gary Anthony Williams often joins in as Mumblin the Magician.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Audiences of Max And The MidKnights have noticed the show’s visual style. It boasts highly textured sets, practical-looking effects, and stylized character movements. These characteristics are associated with stop-motion films like the Wallace and Gromit series. However, the show is constructed solely of computer-generated imagery. The technique gives the impression that the world is handmade.

This decision came from Sharon Flynn and David Skelly, producers for Max And The MidKnights. They admire stop-motion animation, so they applied its aesthetic to the show. The effects were so impressive and realistic that they even fooled the actors. Yen and del Barrio are big fans of the fire and smoke. It shows that hard work and passion pay off in the end.

Final Thoughts

Max And The MidKnights is a breathtaking show worthy of the Nicktoons Hall of Fame. The pacing is good, the characters are fleshed out, and the story is exciting. Of course, the visual art style is on an incredible level. Max And The MidKnights is available on Apple TV and Fandango at Home.
