At first glance, you’d think that he died due to drowning but after taking a closer look, his autopsy revealed that the cause of death is due to ‘acute effects of Ketamine.’ Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic hallucinogen. Meaning, it can make someone feel detached from their environment. As for its therapeutic use, it is used as a short-acting anesthetic in people and other animals. It also may be used off-label to treat post-operative pain or other types of acute pain.

The medical examiner’s report noted that Matthew Perry was taking ketamine infusion therapy to treat depression and anxiety, and he did so over a week before he died. However, the medical examiner ruled that the trace amounts of Ketamine detected in his stomach “could not be from that infusion therapy, since ketamine’s half-life is 3 to 4 hours or less.” Additionally, the renowned actor was known for his history of battling addiction to prescription painkillers and alcohol for years so, might this have been a relapse?
It is worth mentioning that other factors weighed into his passing, such as “coronary artery disease, buprenorphine effects,” as the autopsy report stated. Buprenorphine is a drug used to treat opioid use.
So What Now?
The Los Angeles Police Department refused to provide more comments on Matthew Perry’s death, adding that they have an open and ongoing investigation. The LAPD had joined forces with the Drug Enforcement Administration on the inquiry so that they could come to the conclusion of who caused the actor’s death and let his soul rest in peace.
To this day, people still mourn the superstar’s loss, especially his colleagues like Courtney Cox. She stated that he “visits me a lot, if we believe in that,” adding, “I feel like there are a lot of people that guide us. I sense Matthew’s around for sure.”
