Amid ongoing lawsuit rumors surrounding the termination of Beau DeMayo, Marvel has hired Matthew Chauncey as head writer on X-Men ’97. This is widely seen as a direct replacement for DeMayo, something to have been expected, but might also add flames to the ongoing tension between Disney and the former writer. Regardless of the drama and legal troubles, the production team of X-Men ’97 seems excited and happy with the new writer and direction of the series. Matthew Chauncey
Matthew Chauncey, pictured to the far right, is no stranger to working with Marvel Studios. He was the head writer for What If…? season three, and has also written on Ms. Marvel and the unreleased show Eyes of Wakanda. Chauncey has even worked on Agent Carter, the ABC spin-off about Peggy Carter. Though his work on Agent Carter wasn’t as a writer, it was as a production assistant.
He has been brought on to be the head writer for season three of X-Men ’97. Chauncey has been praised by one of the directors, Emi/Emmett Yonemura as a “genius.” They’ve gone on record saying, “Oh, he’s lovely. I love working with him. He hasn’t even been on long and he’s already a super sweet, incredibly talented writer. So, we’re already having a blast over here and I’m really excited for fans to see what he helps bring to the table because it’s amazing. He’s a genius.”
While Matthew Chauncey will be the head writer for season three, the production team is still working on season two. Although Beau DeMayo will not be receiving credits, he did finish season two before his termination from Disney, so it should be partially written. Still, season two is reportedly being “revised” and reworked while season three is already in the development stage.
When Can We Expect Season 2?
Season two has not only been confirmed but has also been relentlessly teased. It seems that Marvel is going through massive rewrites for season two, although they haven’t confirmed if it was due to DeMayo or not. In an interview, the show’s executive producer, Brad Winderbaum, hinted at what to expect from the series sophomore season.
Winderbaum says that we should expect “two other X teams” in the upcoming season. “There’s many teams, in Marvel, that have the letter X and are followed by a hyphen,” he said, “I would put it to you like this; there are two other X teams in season 2.” He also says that fans can expect cameos as they want to keep that as a strong element throughout the series. Season two is rumored to be released between August 2025 and February 2026.
Beau DeMayo
While Marvel has moved on and hired a new head writer for X-Men ’97, DeMayo is still ramping up for his upcoming lawsuit for wrongful termination. He still maintains that not only was he wrongfully terminated, but that it was due to anti-LGBTQ+ related bigotry.
Recently, his lawyer Bryan Freedman, made a statement regarding the rumors of sexual misconduct as a reason for DeMayo’s firing. He said, “My client never sent lewd videos and photos to his direct reports. This is a bald-faced lie and defamatory,” this statement comes after a publication called The Streamr sent an inquiry to Freedman regarding the rumors.
Freedman continued, “No one who reported Beau to HR received an inappropriate photo or video. That is simply untrue. As a proud gay Black man, Disney knew exactly who he was and what he stood up for, that’s why they did not tell him to stop his OnlyFans page. They let him be himself which allowed his creativity to thrive. When they objected to his free speech rights and not complying with illegal NDAs, a certain person over there tried to replace him because he was becoming more successful than other creators.”
These claims are even more extreme and overtly cite discrimination more than previous claims by either Freedman or DeMayo. It also heavily implies that the replacement by Chauncey was somehow premeditated. If this is the direction of the lawsuit/claims, it would be extremely damaging to Disney, especially if DeMayo wins.

Matthew Chauncey’s work speaks for itself and there is every reason to believe he will do X-Men ’97 justice. With his work on What If…? and the confidence that the director has in him, there’s nothing for fans of the series to fear.
