Mass Effect Universe Trailer Leak Shows the Game EA Killed

A leaked Mass Effect Universe trailer shows a new protagonist and older Liara T'Soni. IGN verified the footage as authentic internal BioWare material.

A trailer for an unannounced Mass Effect project leaked online Oct. 22, one day after Electronic Arts (EA) announced it was closing developer BioWare. The footage, titled “Mass Effect: Universe,” surfaced on Reddit, and both IGN and Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier have since confirmed it’s real.

The Mass Effect Universe trailer opens with on-screen text stating, “The following is in-engine footage from our small team. It uses our pre-production assets,” according to IGN. IGN reported the clip was made for EA leadership and was never meant to reach the public.

What The Leaked Trailer Shows

The footage centers on a new protagonist, a human who served in the Alliance military, the same organization as Commander Shepard, but who isn’t Shepard. In conversation with an Asari at a bar, he explains he’s left the service for a new line of work, one IGN described as heading off conflicts before they ever ignite.

Liara T’Soni makes a surprise appearance, and an older version of the fan favorite helps the hero when the bar erupts into a fight, according to IGN. Asari live for roughly a millennium, so her return fits even with a big time jump, and IGN reported the game would have been set a few hundred years after “Mass Effect 3.”

The clip also includes staples fans expect from the franchise. IGN and Polygon both reported seeing weaponry, biotic powers, alien species including the Krogan, a mass relay, space travel, a nightclub, a galaxy map inside the player’s ship, romance scenes and a sex scene. It’s worth noting the trailer is a cinematic rather than gameplay, so it shows the tone and characters BioWare was aiming for, not how the game would have played.

Confirmed Details Versus Speculation

Can confirm that this is a real trailer of the Mass Effect game that BioWare was developing up until its closure yesterday www.reddit.com/r/masseffect…

— Jason Schreier (@jasonschreier.bsky.social) 2026-10-22T17:30:45.178Z

Schreier posted on Bluesky that the clip is a real trailer for the Mass Effect game BioWare was developing up until its closure, and IGN separately verified it. PC Gamer staff said the trailer looks and sounds authentic to Mass Effect, pointing to the music and voice work, including what appears to be Liara’s voice. Polygon reported that the footage lacks typical markers of AI-generated content.

Kotaku initially struck a more cautious tone, noting the trailer hadn’t been verified, before updating its story to say it’s real. Polygon summed up the early uncertainty directly: “If this is a hoax, it’s an extremely convincing one,” the outlet wrote.

One visual detail ties the new protagonist to the series’ past. Kotaku and Engadget both reported he wears an N7 trench coat, the same look seen in BioWare’s earlier teasers for the next Mass Effect.

Context On The Canceled Project

The next Mass Effect was first announced with a teaser at The Game Awards in December 2020. In its letter to employees, EA said a small BioWare team was working on early development and that the company chose not to move forward, as it refocuses on franchises including Battlefield, Iron Man and a Fight Night revival. Bloomberg reported the cuts total about 400 jobs, roughly 50 of them at BioWare.

That “early development” label is drawing skepticism. A day before the leak, a Reddit user claiming to be an EA employee said a Mass Effect 5 trailer had been ready for months. Catherynne M. Valente, a writer on the project, has also said the team was working on a great game.

What isn’t clear is how much of the game was actually finished, what its story involves beyond the protagonist’s background or whether “Mass Effect: Universe” would have been the final name.

What’s Next For Mass Effect Fans

EA hasn’t issued a statement addressing the leaked footage. Even with Schreier’s and IGN’s confirmation, the trailer remains a leak rather than an official reveal, and with BioWare closed and the project canceled, it may be the only look fans ever get at the game.
