Marvel Lands ‘Avengers’ 5 and 6 Director

We turn to breaking news: THR just reported that the Russo Brothers, Joe, and Anthony Russo, are in early talks to rejoin Marvel Studios and helm the next two Avengers films, which are currently untitled and being billed as Avengers 5 and 6. The announcement comes one week before the next chapter of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), Deadpool and Wolverine, lands in theaters next Friday.

Here’s What We Know

The trade confirms that director Shawn Levy was part of multiple considerations, even to the put of being offered the position. However, the consensus that the details are showing gives the impression that Marvel feels comfortable enlisting the Russos – who have been with the company since Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014, which has seen them helm four films along with also being part of the creative vision behind Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, which were critically acclaimed blockbusters.

In total, every Marvel property the Russos worked on was deemed a success, and the box office finances also speak to that. Numbers show that all their Marvel films combined grossed $6.681 billion, with Endgame standing apart from the pack. To this day, it is still the No. 2 movie of all time globally with $2.79 billion.

In addition, Kevin Feige and company are bringing two panels to Hall H during SDCC; the first is set for next Thursday before the film’s grand opening, and the latter is officially slated for Marvel to have a 1-hour panel that is set to showcase the future of the MCU Saturday night on July 27th.

Marvel Course Corrects

Now, details are minor, except that the fifth Avengers film was once titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, Marvel moved away from the character and focus of Mega-Threat Kang the Conquer after the events of the Jonathan Major trial, where the actor was convicted of harassment. Due to this, Feige and the company decided to pivot from the actor and his role in the franchise, as it’s reported that the film will be branded with a title and a different narrative.

In addition, the sixth installment is still being billed as Secret Wars, which could signal to many fans while creating a variety of theories that Marvel is looking to call upon legacy actors, as the films have done recently with the re-emergence of Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home and even Hugh Jackman in Deadpool and Wolverine

With all this being addressed, the feeling is that Marvel is looking to make a big splash inside Hall H, with the destination of returning to the promise and venture of quality over quantity, which left many weary and skeptical of the once-great Marvel Studios. However, anticipation for Deadpool has been off the charts, and the trailer for Captain America: Brave New Word looked like a moment of the past, and the reception has been highly positive.

Now we wait and wonder what surprises, trailers, or new details will be revealed inside SDCC. Along with the question of what Marvel Studios truly has ready to be revealed via a new theatrical slate.

More details are to follow, as this is still a developing story.

Avengers 5 is set for May 1, 2026, and Secret Wars(Avengers 6) is set for May 7, 2027. Those dates are likely to change, most likely by next week during SDCC.
