Star Wars Legend Joins Cast Of The SpongeBob Movie

The SpongeBob Movie is one of the most highly anticipated movies coming out in 2025. Subtitled “The Search For SquarePants,” the movie is bringing on all of the usual suspects to voice the iconic characters. The show has been around for 25 years and is still going strong. SpongeBob is one of the most recognizable characters in pop culture, and there have been countless shows, movies, and specials. The upcoming movie added a Star Wars legend, which was revealed today. Mark Hamill will be lending his voice to play the Flying Dutchman.

Mark Hamill Joins Cast Of “The SpongeBob Movie”

It isn’t a surprise to see Mark Hamill get the voice acting job for a villain. He has famously voiced the Joker for the last two decades in Batman: The Animated Series and the Arkham video game trilogy. At a San Diego Comic-Con Panel, the cast of the cartoon did a panel where they did a live table read of the beloved pilot “Help Wanted.” Fans were then in for a surprise when Hamill came on stage to announce that he would be joining The SpongeBob Movie.

The famed Star Wars actor then played to the crowd, saying he was happy to voice “one of the most popular villains in the history of SpongeBob” and promised fans the movie would be “inspired silliness, start-to-finish.” This isn’t the first time he has appeared in the SpongeBob. In one episode, he voiced The Moth, the arch-nemesis of Mermaid Man. However, while Moth Man made more appearances, Hamill did not. In the immediate aftermath of the announcement, the original voice actor, Brian Doyle-Murray, started trending. It is unclear why they made the change, though it was likely to bring on a celebrity like Hamill.

Voice Acting Legend

It is difficult to figure out exactly what Mark Hamill will be remembered for. His work as Luke Skywalker no doubt put him on the map, and he is still one of the most iconic characters in film history. However, his voice-acting career is no joke. Outside of the Joker, he has voiced Marvel characters like Hobgoblin, Klaw, and the Inhuman antagonist Maximus. In the DC universe, he isn’t just the Clown Prince of Crime. He also lends his voice to Solomon Grundy, Tony Zucco, and Spectre in various animated series.

Outside of the comic book realm, he voices Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender and Skips, the groundskeeper in Cartoon Network’s Regular Show. If we include his video game resume, the list of characters gets even longer. Master Eraqus in the Kingdom Hearts series, Malefor, The Dark Master in The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, and The Watcher in Darksiders are all voiced by Hamill.

Fans at the panel seemed very excited for the legendary voice actor to join the ranks of The SpongeBob Movie: The Search For SquarePants. The movie hits theaters in 2025, and fans will anxiously await a first-look trailer.
