Margaret Cho has been in comedy for a long time. At 14, she started writing jokes, then at 16, she was doing stand-up. She dropped out of San Francisco State University to pursue comedy and then went to New York City to work in comedy clubs. In the 1980s, she had once opened up for Ellen DeGeneres, so the two were familiar with one another. In the early 2000s. Margaret was a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Ellen pretended like the two had never met.
What Margaret Cho Said on The Kelly Mantle Show
On June 20th, Margaret appeared on Kelly Mantle’s podcast. She told the host that Ellen had treated her badly for most of her career; in fact, she was quite rude.
Ellen was really weird and not nice to me for most of my career.
Cho went on to say that David Bowie, another guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, had spoken about Margaret Cho’s Chinese Emperor outfit at his concert prior to the taping of Ellen’s show, and that part of the Bowie interview was completely cut. She went on to say:
The producer, who’s a really good friend of mine, had to call me and tell me, ‘I can’t believe she did this, but she cut it out of the show… I don’t know if [the cut] was personal, maybe it was for time. But still, I’m gonna take it personally because I decided to.
Either way, it seems as though Ellen certainly didn’t have a lot of respect for her fellow comedienne, Margaret.
Ellen’s Response and What’s Next
So far, Ellen‘s reps have no comment. Cho and DeGeneres are no strangers to controversy. Both have material that can poke at the proverbial hornet’s nest.
In 2020, Ellen was investigated for sexual harassment, as well as workplace bullying on her set. Ellen was referred to as someone who would belittle her crew, partake in racial microaggressions, and disrespect her coworkers. Unsurprisingly, her talk show ended in May 2022.
Currently, Ellen is staying out of the spotlight, for the most part. She is living in Europe with her wife, Portia de Rossi. Margaret still remains a force to be reckoned with in the realm of comedy and has been in some streaming series. She did not let this slow her down. However, she did want to let people know what kind of person Ellen really is.
