A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a person during an arrest in the Marble Hill neighborhood of New York City on Thursday, according to law enforcement sources cited by CBS New York. The person was hospitalized after the shooting, which happened near West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue at about 4 p.m.
The Marble Hill ICE shooting is now under investigation by the FBI’s evidence response team, which responded to the scene alongside investigators from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, according to CBS New York.
What Happened During The Arrest
Preliminary information from law enforcement sources indicates ICE agents were attempting to take a different person into custody when someone who was not the target of that arrest was shot, CBS New York reported. The identity and current condition of the person who was shot have not been released.
Video captured at the scene showed a large law enforcement presence and a gray vehicle sitting in the middle of the road with a bullet hole in the windshield, according to CBS New York.
Reaction From Officials
The shooting adds to a pattern of enforcement incidents under heightened scrutiny. A CBS News analysis found at least 30 shootings involving DHS officers during the second Trump administration, with some turning deadly.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she had been briefed on the incident and pressed federal authorities for answers. “We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident. New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why,” Hochul said, according to CBS New York.
New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin echoed that call in a social media post. “I am deeply concerned by reports of a shooting involving ICE agents in Marble Hill this afternoon. Federal authorities must provide us with a fully transparent account of what took place without delay,” Menin wrote. “I recognize the immense fear that ICE’s actions have caused immigrant New Yorkers, and I’m deeply worried about the additional anxiety and uncertainty this incident may bring to communities across our city as we await answers.”
Background
The shooting is the latest in a string of incidents involving DHS officers nationwide as immigration enforcement activity has intensified. CBS News’ tally of at least 30 such shootings during the current Trump administration provides the broader context for the scrutiny now facing federal authorities over the Marble Hill case.
