M3GAN 2.0 Leads Massive Poster Teaser

M3GAN 2.0

M3GAN 2.0 will be a summer action thriller after the success of its predecessor. Everyone’s favorite killer bot is back with the sequel to the 2023 film. The short teaser debuted during the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, showing the doll breaking out her dance moves to Chappell Roan’s “Femininomenon” and sending a message that she will be back and “slaying” in theatres this June. Gerard Johnstone is returning to direct the sequel M3GAN 2.0, which is set two years after the events of the first film.

M3GAN 2.0 Teases Film with New Poster

Gemma (Allison Williams), a roboticist at a toy company, has become a best-selling author and advocate for government safety on AI. Gemma’s niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), is a rebellious teenager at her wits end of her aunt’s overprotective rules. The short message, which teases the doll’s return in M3gan 2.0, was posted on X by Blumhouse. The studio also gave fans the teaser poster, which shows the doll holding a weapon with the caption, “Miss Me?” The teaser ends with M3gan saying, “Miss Me?” and revealing the sequel’s summer release date.

The 2020s have seen their fair share of horror films, and 2025 will continue that trend. One example is Death of a Unicorn, which stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. Her Scream 5 and Scream 6 co-star Melissa Barrera starred in her recent horror film,  Your Monster. With rising tensions, fans can expect the deadly doll to wreak havoc with her clever and chilling antics. The teaser showed black and pink visuals, hinting at the dark humor and horror that made its mark on the first movie. The doll was sorely missed, but she will make up for it with a story with a broader scope than the first film.

What’s more exciting is that fans will not have one but two killer dolls as M3gan is brought back against a deadly villainous counterpart. Although the teaser does not reveal details of the story, Universal shared a plot line for the sequel, which takes place two years after the first movie: “Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.”

The plotline summary continues, “Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. However, as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around. With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original AI girl is about to meet her match.”

Cast & Crew of M3gan 2.0

The core cast from the first film will reprise their roles in the sequel. Williams will return as Gemma, while McGraw will return as Cady. Donald plays the doll, which Davis voices, and Sakhno brings her new match, Amelia, to life. The film also features Jen Van Epps, Jemaine Clement, Timm Sharp, Aristotle Athari, and Brian Jordan Alvarez. Johnstone returns as the director, while Akela Cooper, who wrote the first one, pens the script. The sequel’s production companies are Blumhouse Productions, Atomic Monster, and Divide/Conquer Production.

James Wan, Jason Blum, and Williams serve as producers, while Johnstone, Greg Gilreath, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Adam Hendricks, and Mark D. Katchur are the executive producers. The first film did well, with an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%, and earned commercial success, grossing over $180 million worldwide from a $12 million dollar budget. Expectations are high, and with the cast and crew back, there’s reason to be optimistic about the upcoming sequel. The idea of a killer doll had been done before, but what set the first film apart was how it leaned into the horror. It became a widespread phenomenon thanks to Donald’s performance and Davis’s vocal acting.

The film takes place at a time when humans can create interactive toys and keep children busy while their parents are doing things other than parenting. To share some details of the first movie, Gemma discovers that the doll learned to hide information. So, Gemma attempts to lock M3gan up at her company and has her colleagues run tests to ensure the AI is safe for the public. In addition, Gemma has a breakthrough with Cady in choosing her well-being ahead of her work. The two spend some quality time together, leaving the doll behind. However, the doll won’t go away.

She escapes the lab and goes on a killing spree through the company. Despite her evolving, M3gan still feels the drive to protect Cady, which means neutralizing Gemma. She tries to persuade Gemma to get out of the way, but Gemma refuses so she can protect her niece. After a fight, Cady rips the doll apart in an act of robotic violence. Gemma and Cady stab the doll’s processor, destroying the AI for good—or so they thought. The sequel was being discussed before the first film’s release, showing the studio’s confidence in the movie’s run at theatres.

Final Thoughts

Considering the success of the first movies, it is not surprising that the sequel is coming soon. The teaser stoked anticipation on what to expect from the doll. With the core cast reprising their roles, fans have every reason to look forward to this sequel. Considering the presence of AI in this thriller series, the sequel will be expected to explore the themes of AI and control. It would be an understatement to say that the stakes are higher considering the ending of the first film, and the tension will be intense. M3GAN 2.0 will hit the big screens on June 27.
