Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film franchise has captivated audiences since The Fellowship of the Ring hit theaters in 2001. Now, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the first live-action movie in the franchise since 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, has a release date set for December 17, 2027.

The film will be directed by Andy Serkis, the talented actor who played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. In addition to directing, he will be reprising his role as the title character. Peter Jackson, who directed the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies, will be back on board as a producer, along with his partners Phillipa Boyens and Fran Walsh.
“Quite an Intense Story”
In an interview with Empire magazine, Boyens stated that The Hunt for Gollum is “quite an intense story, which falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines of Moria.” She went on to say, “It’s a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this amazing creature.” Indeed, since the audience only got glimpses of Gollum during The Fellowship of the Ring, there would be plenty of storytelling potential to show how he was captured and tortured by Orcs and how he silently trailed the Fellowship. Boyens also said there was a second Lord of the Rings spinoff film in production, but it is not related to The Hunt for Gollum.
Other Visits to Middle-Earth
Since the Hobbit trilogy concluded in 2014, fans have been able to get their Middle-Earth fix with the Amazon Prime series The Rings of Power and last year’s animated film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. However, there will be something special about seeing Andy Serkis returning as Gollum. He remains one of the most memorable characters in the franchise, and many people thought Serkis should have been nominated for an Oscar for his performance.
