To preface this, there is a way to play the game in multiplayer without even owning the game at all. If neither you nor a friend owns the game, you can download the demo and play the free trial for about 30 minutes. If you or a friend does happen to own the game, you can send your friend an invite from the main menu for a multiplayer session.
