CGI Lion King Returns With A Mufasa Prequel

The Lion King, before Mufasa prequel

In 2019, Disney released the live-action version of The Lion King in theaters. The cast featured Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Seth Rogan, and many more. The movie, directed by Jon Favreau, brought in a whopping $1.6 billion at the box office, making it one of the most successful Disney live-action films to date. At D23, it was announced that we will have a Lion King prequel focusing primarily on Mufasa. Here’s what we know so far:

Mufasa: The Lion King Cast

So far, we have a few confirmed cast members for the film. According to IMDB, we will see much of the original cast return, including Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Seth Rogan, Billy Eichner, and more. Of course, we also have new cast members, including Blue Ivy Carter, who will voice the character of Kiara, the daughter of Simba and Nala.

Aaron Pierre will voice Mufasa for this film rather than James Earl Jones, with young Mufasa being voiced by Braelyn Rankins. Keith David also joins the cast, someone who has had involvement with several Lion King projects, including Timone and Pumba.

The Plot

Mufasa: The Lion King has the audience following Simba as he tells his cub, Kiara, the story of her grandfather. In this story, we get to see the upbringing of Scar and Mufasa. We get to see how Mufasa began as an orphan, being taken in by the royal family. In the trailer, we also see the two bond as brothers, something that we know the outcome of. The interesting part is seeing how they go from best friends to rivals, with Scar eventually murdering his brother.

Lin Manuel-Miranda announced that he will be doing the music for the movie at D23. He revealed that he was working on the music for Encanto when he received the offer for the prequel but still felt compelled to work on the film.

Manuel-Miranda describes this while on stage at D23. He said, “Honestly, when Barry sent me the screenplay to Mufasa, I was in the middle of writing Encanto. I had not figured out how the magical family was going to get out of this one,” the crowd laughs as Manuel-Miranda continues, “but I read the screenplay and I just—you know, you think you know Mufasa, you think you know Scar, but I had no idea and I could see where the songs went.” He then went on to say that it was a joy to be in the service of a great director.

The director in question is Barry Jenkins, who has previously directed If Beale Street Could Talk and Moonlight, which won multiple Academy Awards.

Conclusion

This live-action prequel seems like a fresh story that will give us new perspectives on a hero and a villain we thought we knew. With a cast filled with beloved and familiar voices, this movie is likely to be as successful as its predecessor.

Mufasa: The Lion King is set to release on December 20th.
