Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Linkin Park is coming back to life. After the tragic death of their lead singer, Chester Bennington, 38-year-old Emily Armstrong is taking the reins as a new co-lead singer. She and Mike Shinoda make up the new vocal powerhouses with fresh energy. This news is excellent for hand-banging teenagers and long-time nostalgic adult fans of Linkin Park.
Emily Armstrong’s Career Before Linkin Park
Emily was born and raised in Los Angeles and started singing and playing guitar at age 11. After dropping out of high school, she became a songwriter and had no interest in pursuing other careers. She and her friends formed the band “Dead Sara” and founded their own indie label, Pocket Kid Records, releasing their first single album, Weatherman, an indie rock hit. Dead Sara then toured North America and Europe as an opening act and with the Van’s Warped tour.
Joining Linkin Park
Emily knows that she isn’t a replacement for Chester Bennington but rather wants to carry on what Bennington created. In a Billboard interview, she said, “How do I be myself in this, but also carry on the emotion and what [Bennington] brought to this band?” While the Band will be going on tour, they will be playing old favorites, but fans should expect new material from the new album, “From Zero,” set for release on November 15.
Winning Over Fans
Linkin Park has harbored a loyal fan base since its first album, “Hybrid Theory.” Veteran members Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Phoenix and Joe Hahn handpicked Armstrong, intending to bring new life to the band. Drummer Colin Brittain is also another new face, rounding out the roster. The Band has already released a single titled “The Emptiness Machine,” which was well received. A live stream performance, which occurred 20 hours ago during this writing, hit 4,214,145 views.
Remembering Chester Bennington
Bennington was found deceased by suicide in his home at age 41 on July 20, 2017. This came shortly after the suicide of his best friend and fellow musician, Chris Cornell, on May 18, 2017, who was aged 52. Sadly, Bennington battled substance abuse and mental health issues, with the suicide death of his best friend being the apparent tipping point. He left behind six children and a wife. Linkin Park seemed to be no more at the time.
Controversy Surrounding Emily Armstrong
Armstrong has her share of divided opinions and questions about her background. Reports of Armstrong’s affiliation with the Church of Scientology made many fans uncomfortable. Her alleged online support of convicted rapist and actor Danny Masterson certainly hasn’t helped her image much, either. Armstrong still follows the actor and his ex-wife, Bijou Phillips, on Instagram at the time of this writing.
Final Thoughts
An exciting, new era awaits rap-rock fans, regardless of whether they’re directly Linkin Park fans. Though divided opinions, Linkin Park fans, both young and old, have an exciting future ahead, and many are awaiting their November album release date. Their tour kicks off in Inglewood, California, on September 11 and will play shows around the world. As for fans accepting Armstrong, the controversy surrounding her remains to be seen. One thing is for sure: their PR team will probably be busy.
