It’s been over two weeks since the live-action Lilo and Stitch remake hit theaters. And it appears Disney is looking to have the blue-furred alien dominate the summer. The Magical Kingdom is bringing back the iconic cartoon show from the early 2000s. It features the continuing misadventures of the mismatched duo from the original animated feature. At the same time, they must complete a crucial job, or their world faces destruction. Care to learn more about this program and when it’s making its grand return?
Recapping Lilo and Stitch: The Series
Lilo and Stitch: The Series begins with the renowned Disney film from 2002. It follows a young Hawaiian girl who adopts a genetically engineered alien experiment resembling a dog. Their story continued in the semi-canonical standalone sequel, Stitch Has a Glitch. However, the cartoon officially began with the follow-up video, Stitch! The Movie. It introduced the premise of the show as well as new prominent characters.
In Lilo and Stitch: The Series, Stitch’s 625 experimental prototypes are let loose. Each one has its own set of powers capable of destroying the entire Earth. It’s Lilo and Stitch’s job to capture and rehabilitate them into productive creatures of society. Helping them are the mad genius Dr. Jumba Jookiba and the Earth enthusiast Pleakley. Unfortunately, Jumba’s former associate, Jacques von Hämsterviel, desires to conquer the universe using the experiments. And he has the disgraced Galactic Federation captain Gantu as his personal experiment hunter.
The Cartoon Returns for Special Holiday
Lilo and Stitch: The Series ran for almost three seasons before concluding in 2006. The show initially premiered on ABC before coming to the Disney Channel a month later. It even had crossovers with other Disney cartoons, which were popular around the time. The animated program received a proper finale in the form of a television film. And to this day, it’s considered one of the best spin-off series in cartoon history.
Disney is now bringing this popular animated show back following the live-action remake’s success. The series will air on Disney Channel on the 26th of this month. Fans of Walt’s Magical Kingdom have dubbed it as Stitch Day. It’s a fun reference to Stitch being Jumba’s 626th genetic experiment. Still, episodes from Lilo and Stitch: The Series will play throughout this fan-centric holiday.
It is unclear whether the entire show or only select episodes will play that day. Nevertheless, it’ll give longtime fans a chance to relive their favorite moments from the show. And modern audiences can experience a beloved hit from one of Disney’s most popular franchises. Let’s hope they’re ready to experience a Hawaiian roller coaster ride of a cartoon.
Final Thoughts
I loved watching Lilo and Stitch: The Series when I was younger! Watching the new experiments wreak havoc and learning their functions were my favorite parts. Of course, I also liked it when Lilo deduced their new beneficial roles in society. I’ll try to catch an episode or two when the series returns to Disney Channel. And you can, too, on June 26 in celebration of Stitch Day. Until then, watch the live-action Lilo and Stitch remake in theaters now!
