The Abuse By The Turpin Parents

The Turpin siblings were finally rescued from their family home after years of abuse from their parents. The then-17-year-old Jordan Turpin escaped the abusive home and called 911, leading to the public learning about the abuse in the Turpin household. The then-teenager told the operator, which People obtained, “My parents are abusive. My two little sisters right now are chained up … they’re they’re up to their beds.”

She then continued, “I live in a family of 15 people, and our parents are abusive. We live in filth. Sometimes I wake up and can’t breathe because of how dirty the house is.” The siblings were physically, verbally, and mentally abused routinely. They were deprived of food and exercise, and they were chained to their beds. Due to the gruesome details of the abuse, many wondered how parents could be so terrible to their own children.

How Jordan Turpin Escaped

The turning point for the 13 siblings came through an act of sheer, desperate courage. The then 17-year-old had spent two years quietly formulating a plan to save her brothers and sisters. The catalyst for her escape occurred when her mother began violently raging about an impending family move to Oklahoma, threatening to chain the children up once they arrived permanently.

Realizing that moving might mean death for her and her siblings, Jordan took her older brother’s cellphone and slipped out of a window. Before that night, she had never even walked on a public sidewalk. When Riverside County authorities arrived at the home, they were met with a scene that defied belief. Three children were actively shackled to their furniture.

The others were severely malnourished, pale, and isolated in foul-smelling rooms. Many of the older siblings were so stunted by starvation that officers initially mistook them for young children. Following the rescue, the swift arm of the law came down on the parents. When arrested, the mom inexplicably believed a simple apology and parenting classes would resolve the situation, demonstrating a terrifying detachment from the reality of her crimes.

Further Heartbreak

The father, however, understood immediately that their decades of abuse had finally caught up to them. The parents faced multiple counts of torture, false imprisonment, and child abuse. The Turpin parents were convicted on all 14 felony counts. They were sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Several of the Turpin children, whose ages ranged from 2 to 29 at the time of their rescue, were put in foster care.

Unfortunately, many of them were subjected to abuse by their foster family. Via Biography, authorities and the public described the Turpin family home as a “House of Horrors.” Not only were the children chained up, but they were also subjected to being left to their own waste. Also, they were only allowed a shower once a year.

Six of the Turpin siblings filed a lawsuit against the foster parents they lived with in 2022. The foster parents were accused of sexual abuse, physical abuse, and making sexually inappropriate comments. In September 2024, foster parents Marcelino and Rosa Olguin got plea agreements with prosecutors. The then-65-year-old foster dad pleaded guilty to four counts of committing lewd acts on a minor aged 14 or 15, while being at least 10 years older.

He pled guilty to three counts of lewd acts on a child under 14, one count of false imprisonment, and one count of child injury. The Olguins’ daughter, Lennys Olguin, and the foster mother each pleaded guilty to three counts of willful child cruelty, along with single counts of false imprisonment and witness intimidation.

The following month, Mr. Olguin was sentenced to seven years in prison, while his wife and daughter were each sentenced to four years of probation.
