Recalls: Multiple Adult Portable Bed Rails; 2 Deaths Reported
When we buy safety equipment for our aging parents or grandparents, we expect it to do exactly that—keep them safe. We don’t expect a glaring geometry failure that turns a protective device into a lethal trap. Yet, here we are. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has just slapped the industry with a massive recall involving two different brands of adult portable bed rails.
If you or a loved one relies on a bed rail to prevent nighttime falls, you need to pay attention. We are looking at a critical design flaw that has already cost two people their lives. Let’s break down exactly what went wrong, the physics behind the hazard, and how to get these defective products out of your house immediately.
The Vive Health Bed Rail Recall

First on the chopping block is a massive recall from Vive Health. We are talking about roughly 122,000 units of adult portable bed rails sold nationwide between September 2019 and December 2025.
The engineering failure here is frankly infuriating. When these rails are attached to a bed, a gap can form either within the rail itself or between the metal rail and the side of the mattress. In the safety and biomechanics world, this is called an entrapment zone. If a user rolls into this gap, they can become wedged. Because the users of these products are typically elderly or have limited mobility, they cannot extract themselves.
Tragically, this isn’t just a theoretical hazard. Vive Health has reported two asphyxiation deaths related to these entrapment zones. In September 2024, a 97-year-old man in a Texas assisted living facility and a 93-year-old man in his Florida home both lost their lives. It is absolutely heartbreaking, and it is entirely preventable.
The specific models included in this recall are the Vive Health Compact Bed Rail (model LVA2009SLV), the Bed Rail Collection V (model LVA2097SLV), and certain LVA1024 models. They are made of silver or white metal tubing with a black foam rubber grip.
How to Handle Your Vive Health Refund
If you have one of these in your home, stop using it right this second. Do not wait for the weekend. Take it off the bed.
To process your recall and get your money back, Vive Health requires a bit of arts and crafts. Grab a permanent marker and write the word “RECALLED” across both the upper and lower portions of the metal rail. Next, write your name on a piece of paper, place it next to your newly defaced bed rail, and snap a photo. Email that photo directly to [email protected]. Once you’ve sent the email, throw the rail in the trash so it can never be used again.
The MPINOI Amazon Bed Rail Recall

While Vive Health makes up the bulk of the affected units, a smaller but equally sketchy recall involves MPINOI-branded bed rails sold exclusively on Amazon by a third-party seller named Bioenrrty.
Only about 200 of these units are out in the wild, but they violate the exact same mandatory safety standards for adult portable bed rails. They create the exact same deadly entrapment and asphyxiation hazards as the Vive models, and to make matters worse, they don’t even bother to include the legally required hazard warning labels.
These units are white metal, measuring 15 inches wide by 26 inches tall, and feature a black storage mesh pocket with “MPINOI” stamped right on it.
Steps to Process Your MPINOI Refund
Because this is a random Amazon third-party seller, the recall process feels a little DIY, but you still need to do it to get your $30 back.
Stop using the rail immediately. Get a pair of heavy-duty scissors and physically cut the black safety strap in half. Take your trusty Sharpie, write “RECALLED” on the upper and lower metal rails, and take a photo of the destroyed product. You then have to email this photographic proof of destruction to [email protected]. Yes, you are emailing an Outlook address for a safety recall. Welcome to the modern e-commerce landscape.
Protect Your Loved Ones
We rely on federal standards to ensure the geometry and spacing of medical equipment won’t actively harm the people we love most. When companies fail to engineer these products correctly, it’s up to us to catch the mistakes. Check your parents’ and grandparents’ beds, and make sure these hazards are removed from your homes today.
