Product Warning/Recall: Rozato Tabletop Fire Pits for Fire Risk, 1 Death Reported

What’s up with this? Is it a recall or not? That’s a good question, and we have some more information for you.

I can see the appeal. Having a cute little tabletop firepit to roast snacks with your friends while you enjoy the warm weather. But what you never bargain for is that firepit causing a fire to break out that sends you or your guests to the emergency room. Or worse.

What’s Happening With the Tabletop Firepits?

These tabletop firepits have a fuel container where you pour liquid fuel such as isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, ethanol/bioethanol, or other flammable liquids. Then you light that pool of fuel. I’m just going to pause there because I’m sure you’re picturing how this works. It sounds like a bad idea from the start. But that didn’t stop them from being manufactured and sold.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warning, when you light that pool of fuel, it can cause an uncontrolled fire that burns far hotter than expected. The fuels mentioned above can burn as hot as 1,600 degrees! The second situation is when you’re refilling the pool. A tiny flame in the container could be hard to see. In that case, pouring additional fuel can cause an explosion “that propels flames and burning liquid onto” nearby people.

These aren’t theoretical dangers. One person has died, and there have been multiple burn injuries.

There are two styles of tabletop firepits sold by Rozato: the rectangular, which comes with a bamboo serving board, three extendable roasting forks, four cheese forks, and a cheese knife, and the round, which comes with four extendable serving forks.

They were sold at Rozato.Store, Amazon.com, StoreDune.com, StovesDirect.com, RetailMarket.net, and other websites (I saw one for sale on Mercari) starting in 2022, priced from around $15 to $70. So these and similar products are still for sale out in the wild.

What to Do About This Recall

Well, there’s the trouble. Rozato, the retailer, hasn’t agreed with the CPSC to issue a recall of the products. But that doesn’t stop them from being dangerous. So, what can you do about it?

First, stop using these tabletop firepits. In fact, don’t use any similar products. The CSPC has issued a blanket warning for alcohol or other liquid-burning fire pits. You can see the details of that recall here. In that warning, they report at least two deaths and dozens of burns.

Second, do not sell it or give it away. Please dispose of the product in a safe way so that no one else can use it. And, if you’ve experienced an issue where someone was hurt by this or any product, you can report it at www.SaferProducts.gov.

Of course, if you purchased it recently, you could try to return it to the seller for a refund.

Some Final Thoughts

The fact that the retailer isn’t taking the product off the market is very concerning, but even worse, how did these things end up being sold in the first place? After reviewing both CPSC warnings, it’s clear that product safety testing should have revealed how dangerous these products could be. Or maybe just a better design in the first place.

However you enjoy the outdoors, just be safe out there, especially when fire is involved. The world is better with you in it.
