Maura Tierney, a former ER cast member, will replace Camryn Manheim as the new lieutenant in charge at the station during the upcoming Law and Order season. This series is well known for its cast of characters constantly changing, as well as the spinoff series with ever-changing casts, like Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

Heading into the 24th season, which is an incredible feat for any TV show, Law and Order finally found a replacement for Dixon. Maura Tierney will become the new lieutenant Kate Dixon, taking over for Camryn Manheim who did a fantastic job and capped off her incredible acting career with Law and Order during the finale of season 23.

But, she has left the role in good hands. Tierney was not only a well-known cast member and respected actress during her time at ER, but she also appeared in hit shows like ‘The Good Wife’ and ‘The Affair’. And she’s not the only one who is coming in to fill a role for the revolving doors that is the cast of Law and Order.

A Look Into Tierney’s Career

If the name doesn’t sound familiar, her face certainly will be. Maura Therese Tierney is a well-known and respected actor who began her movie career with big hits like ‘Primal Fear’, ‘Liar Liar’, ‘Forces of Nature’, ‘Baby Mama’, and, most recently, ‘Twister’.  She isn’t just for the big screen as she has had numerous appearances on hit TV shows like ER, The Affair, and NewsRadio. Along with ER, her role in The Affair (the show about the novelist Noah Holloway and his affair with a younger woman) earned her a Golden Globe Award.

Now, she is joining the Law and Order cast for the 24th season. She is no stranger to being in the same role for a long time, either, something that NBC might enjoy. She starred in ER as the same character for almost 200 episodes, along with almost 100 episodes as Lisa Miller in NewsRadio. She has also had short-term stints on hit shows, like Maddie Hayward in The Good Wife, Kathryn Peale in The Whole Truth, and Grace Poe in American Rust.

The Saga Continues

The NBC show is known for its intense storylines and gripping plots – and also for routine cast changes in very short amounts of time, like within half a season or one season of filming. For Example: Anderson played Detective Kevin Bernard for one season until he was replaced by Mehcad Brooks in a new role.

One of the biggest departures in Law and Order that had everyone in the ‘crime’ world talking was Sam Waterston leaving at the beginning of season 23. He had been on screen as Jack McCoy for more than 400 episodes, arguably the longest-running character in the series and a TV show, ever. He was replaced by Nicholas Baxter, under the guise that McCoy resigned after solving a particularly tough case. Keep an eye out for more mysterious cast changes in the seasons to come.
