The Last of Us Season 2 finale ended with a bang and a frustrated shout. At least that’s what happened here. Let’s recap and talk about everything that happened in the Last of Us Season 2 Finale. Spoilers ahead!
The Last of Us Season 2 Finale Recap
If you haven’t played the game, you’re watching the show without knowing all of the story beats and events. The Last of Us Season 2 Finale felt like another punch in the gut and has left some of us with so many unresolved emotions.
Ellie returns to the theater, where Jesse has been taking care of Dina. When he was removing the arrow from her leg, he offered her a drink from his flask, and she refused. She also said, “I can’t die.” The clues were too obvious, and he figured out that she’s pregnant, which just gave him more reason to be angry with Ellie. Then Ellie tells Dina what Joel did in Salt Lake City, and we see a fracture in their relationship.
Meanwhile, there’s a problem with the WLF as well. Abby and her crew have gone somewhere, and they don’t know where. Isaac had planned for her to be the next leader, but now, maybe not so much.
Jesse and Ellie go to meet Tommy at a bookstore rendezvous point, but Tommy isn’t there. When they hear a commotion on the WLF walkie, they realize that Tommy is in trouble. But, when they’re looking out over the city to determine where he is, Ellie spots the aquarium and understands the clues she got from Nora, “wheel” and “whale.” She and Tommy argue and split up.
Getting to the aquarium is not easy since Ellie decides she has to cross the water in a motorboat. She sees the WLF army on the move in boats headed somewhere, too. They’re going to attack the Seraphites. To make everything more dramatic, there’s a major thunderstorm happening, and Ellie’s boat capsizes, sending her into the water.
She manages to get to a beach, but it’s the Seraphite island, and she’s captured, briefly, in a very tense moment before the Seraphites respond to the sudden attack of the WLF. So, Ellie is forgotten and returns to the beach to take a boat the rest of the way to the aquarium. That’s where she finds Owen and Mel, but not Abby. She threatens them to find out where Abby is, but Owen pulls a gu,n and the result is tragic. Ellie shoots first and kills him, but the bullet ricochets and also kills Mel, who was pregnant. Tommy and Jesse find Ellie there, grieving over what just happened.
Back at the theater, Ellie and Jesse are left alone by the stage to talk out their differences. Jesse admits he cares, and he knows Ellie would fight to save him, too. Shouting interrupts them, and they run out of the theater proper. A gun fires as soon as Jesse goes through the door. Abby. She has Tommy down and Ellie bargains herself for Tommy, admitting she killed Abby’s friends. Abby says, “I let you live.” She fires her gun. The screen goes black.
Time rewinds, and we’re back to Seattle Day One, and Abby is in a stadium where the WLF has set up quite the operation, including animal pens, buildings, and crops. Credits roll.
Thoughts and Feelings
Wow. The shooting of Jesse caused quite a reaction at my viewing. It was sudden and startling. The Last of Us Season 2 Finale is the season ending they promised and then some. For those familiar with the game or following coverage, you know that this is only half of the second game in the series.
Season 3 will cover the remainder and, for the most part, Abby’s side of events in Seattle. Maybe it will make her more sympathetic. Though it’s unclear if that’s possible given how much everyone loved Joel. Having said that, please remember that Abby is a character and Kaitlyn Dever is an actor. She isn’t really Abby. Shoveling hate and threats at the actor is just plain wrong. Be kind, people.
The scene where the Seraphites capture Ellie was particularly tense. Even if we know Ellie has more to do, it was genuinely scary to watch them start to hang her, especially if you’ve recently been through “The Handmaid’s Tale’s” last episode. And what about Dina and Ellie’s relationship? Will it survive everything that’s happened? It’s going to be a difficult road, that’s for sure.
Season 3
The Last of Us Season 2 Finale is about two years after Season 1. So, reasonably, we might expect Season 3 in 2027. That sounds like a long way away, doesn’t it? The good news is that the series is definitely renewed, and the cast is returning. Whenever there are filming details, we’ll be on top of it! We can’t wait for the conclusion to this epic story.
