Kerry Washington Commands Respect In The Six Triple Eight

Kerry Washington As Charity Adams Earley in The Six Triple Eight

When people think of World War II, they think about the bravery and the loss of loved ones. As one of the most brutal conflicts in U.S. history, it’s unbelievable that there are still stories buried from that time. Kerry Washington’s role in Netflix’s The Six Triple Eight is reminiscent of Andrew Garfield’s Oscar-nominated turn as Desmond Doss, a Seventh-Day Adventist and conscientious objector who refused to fire any firearms during the Second World War. Now Kerry Washington will take the role of Charity Adams Earley, the first colored US lieutenant colonel woman.

Kerry Washington Stars in Tyler Perry War Drama

The Six Triple Eight, a film detailing the life of Lieutenant Colonel Charity Adams Earley, has been written and directed by Tyler Perry and is set to drop on the streaming giant Netflix this December. Scandal and American Son star Kerry Washington stars as Charity Earley and can be seen running a tight ship. While his name is usually attached to feature films depicting his turns as the street-smart, no-nonsense grandmother Madea Earlene Simmons, it seems he’s begun to turn to more serious subject matter. Charity Earley was the first African American woman to be an officer in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps AKA the WAAC.

Major Earley can be seen leading an all-Black battalion of women to motivate into a group of steadfast, efficient force. Earley grew up exceptionally bright as she skipped multiple grades and finished high school early. When the country was well into the world war conflict with the Axis powers and the WAAC was formed to gain support, Earley was motivated to join the effort. Earley remained at her post in Fort Des Moines until 1944. While there, he worked as a staff training officer, a station control officer, and a company commander.

First Look at Six Triple Eight

Netflix’s official teaser for The Six Triple Eight echoes Washington’s remarks to her elite team of wonder women as we see multiple dressed to impress and prepping for the battlefield. Washington’s turn as Colonel Earley can be heard stating “A lot of people do not want us to succeed” and “We have the most to prove.” She wasn’t wrong. In those times, the majority of women had cultural icons like Rosie the Riveter to convince them that factory work or maintaining a healthy home life were the only jobs they were capable of.

It’s incredible to see a real-life figure that will potentially usher in a new audience to these historical war epics. A figure of color especially will make people of similar backgrounds be able to consider working in a field that they didn’t believe would be a good fit for them. Knowing of Tyler Perry’s 330-acre Atlanta movie and production studio space, odds are high that he most likely filmed this on his own backlot. Dropping this feature during the Christmas season makes this story of heroism and triumph a true gift.

While the minute-long teaser has not revealed their roles, a litany of Hollywood’s biggest stars have signed on to this project as well. According to a Variety report, Media mogul Oprah Winfrey, Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon, Breaking Bad star Dean Norris, Sam Waterston, Milauna Jackson, Donna Biscoe, and Gregg Sulkin are all signed on to be in Six Triple Eight as well.
