Kaiju No. 8: The Next Best Sci-Fi Action

With its unique abilities and incredible design, Kaiju No. 8 has proved it is worth the hype! Those who love Kaiju series have been eagerly waiting for the Japanese manga adapted series Kaiju No. 8. The manga was written and illustrated by Naoya Matsumoto and the anime adaptation debuted in April, 2024. Since the original manga was already very popular, people tend to have high expectations from the anime as well.

The word Kaiju is used for some kind of monster or creatures who regularly attack the people of Japan for years and there’s also a Japanese Defense Force for Kaiju who is continuously working to kill these monsters and keep the country safe. There are several Kaiju movies, shows, and manga made in Japan as people love monster battles.

What Is Kaiju No. 8 About?

Imagine living in a world where anytime anywhere, you can get attacked by a creature. It’s so common that there are even traffic lights to alert the people about Kaiju. Kaiju No. 8 has some similar situations like this. In the anime, we get to see an ordinary man named Kafka Hibino, working as a sweeper for Professional Kaiju Cleaner Corporation. The sweepers do the cleaning of Kaiju after they are killed by the defense force. The defense force team was like a celebrity to the ordinary people as they were doing a great job in disposing of creatures which is why many people wanted to join the force and Kafka Hibino was one of them.

Kafka Hibino wasn’t satisfied with his job as he always wanted to work for the defense force where he can kill Kaiju for good. He tried to join the defense force several times but failed so he accepted his fate and started working as the sweeper instead which paid him a decent salary. One day a new recruit joins Kafka’s cleaning team who had some ambitions like Kafka before which reminded him of his lost dream. Kafka could connect with the new recruit as he could see himself in him. After that several unfortunate incidents happened with Kafka which led him to encounter an actual Kaiju.

It was like a parasite which made its way into Kafka’s body through his mouth which ended up turning him into a humanoid Kaiju himself. By turning into a Kaiju, he gained some new powers. He decided to use those powers and kill other Kaiju instead to finally make his long-lost dream into reality.

The Anime’s Review

Kaiju No. 8 anime is presented by the production team called Production IG who has animated some good anime series previously. I personally liked the plot and storyline as it has an emotional angle to it. Kafka’s role is very heart touching as he always dreamt to achieve a particular thing but he couldn’t. His dialogues and even the jokes have hidden pain behind it. Besides the characters, the animation itself for the series is amazing.

The design and artwork are done very beautifully and the switch from one scene to another is very swift as well. If we talk about the music, the production team totally nailed it. The music had a rhythm and you could tell that something dangerous was going to happen just by listening to background music. It complimented the anime so well.

At first, there were some mixed responses as some people felt the anime was a bit slow compared to the manga itself but with each episode released, the interest towards the series grew as well. It’s possible that Kaiju No. 8 might become the next big thing in the sci-fi action genre.
