Women worldwide are taking necessary precautions by setting their social media handles private after a sinister deepfake AI cybercrime was uncovered on the cloud-based mobile and desktop messaging app Telegram. This crime has rocked South Korea and countries around the world due its extensive circulation. The entertainment industry in particular has been affected as K-Pop idols and actresses have been used for content and agencies are trying to combat this ongoing cybercrime internationally.
AI-Generated Deepfake Pornography
AI has played a major role in the creation of this new type of porn, dubbed “Deepfake Porn.” This deepfake AI nightmare involves taking photos of women and minors and superimposing them with an AI-created nude body, pre-existing sexual content, or real photos edited to appear nude. Reports have shown that this fusion of porn, artificial intelligence, and the freedom of social media has led to extensive damage. Technology only made it more difficult to distinguish whether or not a video is the product of deepfake porn or real, making this type of exploitation even more dangerous.
Telegram As A Hunting Ground
Telegram has been instrumental in sharing this disturbing deepfake pornography. It was reported that massive chatrooms were set up with the intention of humiliating women and even minors. Many people used female family members and classmates to enter those chatrooms and share their details in order to instigate cybersex trafficking. The shared details and photos led to the creation of sexual deepfakes, which were then circulated widely via the app. One channel reportedly had 220,000 members and was equipped with a program that instantly turned a photo into a nude one.
K-Pop Idols And Actresses Have Been Targeted
In the process of spreading awareness, netizens have unveiled the extensive roots of deepfake porn. A report by Security Hero revealed that out of 96,000 videos from ten deepfake porn sites and 85 deepfake channels, 53% of the individuals who appeared in deepfake pornography were KPop idols and actresses, many of whom are minors, such as BabyMonster, ILLIT, and more. As of this writing, more than 200 female idols have been found in deepfake porn.
The disturbing trend created a link between K-Pop idols and the porn industry known as the second “Nth room.” Also taking place on Telegram, the original Nth room was a criminal case involving blackmail, cybersex trafficking, and sexually exploitative videos between 2018 and 2020.

Last month, Telegram’s founder, Pavel Durov, was arrested in France as part of a preliminary investigation into alleged failures to prevent the criminal use of the platform. The company does not readily provide investigation data such as account information; thus, the police plan to collaborate with investigative authorities and international institutions to find effective methods for investigation. K-Pop agencies are also declaring war against these illegal video fabrications. JYP Entertainment and YG Entertainment revealed that they’re collecting data on deepfake videos of their girl groups and will take legal measures against the videos’ creators and distributors.
