Jujutsu Kaisen may have ended with the release of the last chapter of the manga, but the anime is far from over. The anime will have at least one more season and is rumored to have four seasons in total. While we wait for season three, let’s talk about the beloved JJK movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and everything the prequel film did right. Slight spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen the movie yet.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 takes place about one year before the events of season one of the series. In this, we follow a character only briefly mentioned in season one: Yuta Okkotsu. This boy, much like Yuji, was slated for execution by the higher-ups of jujutsu society. This is because he had a powerful curse following him, made from the spirit of his childhood friend, Rika. Despite how powerful Rika is, Yuta struggles to control her, especially since she seems to come out when protecting him.
Throughout the movie, we follow Yuta’s journey as he becomes a jujutsu sorcerer and learns to control Rika. We also learn more about characters we’ve already been introduced to, like Maki, Inumaki, and Panda. We were introduced to them in season one, but they’re older than our main cast, and because of that, not much is known about some of them until Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The exception would be Maki, given that we see her backstory during season one.
Suguru Geto is one of the most critical plots we explore in the film. While we see him in season one, he’s not himself, and we don’t know anything about him or his history. In JJK 0, we see the history between him and Satoru Gojo. We learn that the two were best friends in their high school years, and we also get to see more about Geto’s plan, which was only briefly mentioned in the series.
JJK 0 vs. Anime Filler Movies
Anime movies are nothing new. Naruto has eleven movies, One Piece has fifteen, and not all of these movies are canon. This means that some things that happen in this movie don’t matter in the grand scheme of the story or aren’t true to the story. The only Naruto movie that is canon is Naruto: The Last. While fans sometimes enjoy anime movies, it can be frustrating for nothing to amount within the movie, for nothing to matter.
Jujutsu Kaisen didn’t do any of that. We’re only getting this one movie, and it matters. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 not only answered questions that arose in season one but also set up for season two beautifully. Season two, beginning with the story of Gojo and Geto’s friendship and eventual falling out, is the perfect follow-up to JJK 0, ending with Geto’s death. The movie is also the only time we see Yuta until the end of season two, despite him being an important character referenced multiple times, all of which speak of his strength and power. The film is also important when understanding why Gojo didn’t properly dispose of Geto’s body, leading to him getting used by Kenjaku.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 gave fans depth to the characters they love and the world they were beginning to know. Prequels sometimes feel unnecessary, but nothing about JJK 0 felt that way. Despite not featuring the three characters within the main cast, it enriched the audience’s love for other characters, giving them a shining moment and a spotlight. One of the best things about Jujutsu Kaisen is the deep love that viewers/readers feel for all of the characters, and this film is a part of the reason that love exists.
Final Thoughts
While anime fans love any content that features their favorite characters and the world they love, many have expressed their growing disdain for filler. Many fans would rather have movies and episodes that add to the story rather than waste time with fluff. Filler is sometimes good, but too much of it can be overwhelming. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 represents what many anime fans want from modern anime and anime films. It perfectly added to the plot, doing the story justice and making everything right.
