Johnny Depp Addresses #MeToo and His Turbulent Relationship With Amber Heard

Amber Heard

Johnny Depp, the talented actor who is known for his versatility, is also sadly known for his long battle with ex-wife Amber Heard. After a relatively brief marriage, they had a rather ugly divorce. Several years later, there was a highly publicized defamation case that took place over a period of several months. Amber claimed abuse throughout the short-lived marriage, while Johnny vehemently denied the allegations.

Johnny and Amber met while they were filming The Rum Diary back in 2009 and began seeing each other. They were married from 2015 to 2016. After a very nasty divorce, Amber claimed that Johnny was abusive and controlling. She stated both physical and mental/emotional abuse and filed a lawsuit.

Johnny Depp maintained that he did not abuse Amber and that she was the one who was volatile during their marriage. He also stated that she often amplified any issues they were having in order to change the dynamic. They were in court for several months during the spring of 2022. The court ultimately ruled in favor of Johnny, awarding him $10 million.

Johnny Depp Says He was the Original #metoo

In 2017, the entertainment industry went through a change. It saw literally hundreds of women coming forward to state that they had been victims of sexual assault and harassment – and often abhorrent treatment – from producers, costars, and anyone involved in the entertainment industry. The most famous was the allegations against Harvey Weinstein. Amber Heard alleged she had similar experiences in her relationship with Johnny Depp.

Having a long, drawn-out divorce and accusations thrown his way, Johnny stated that he was “pre #metoo.”

…I was like a crash test dummy for #MeToo. It was before Harvey Weinstein. And I sponged it, took it all in. And so I wanted from the hundreds of people I’ve met in that industry to see who was playing it safe.

Johnny also referenced people who were afraid to speak out for him. He said that there were some people whom he had regarded as friends who wanted to be careful, fit in, and they went “woke.”

Johnny Depp Looks Back on His Amber Heard Relationship

Coming from a different place at this point since it’s been several years later, Johnny Depp now says he learned that there were some people whom he had considered allies. They didn’t want to go against the norm. It’s not that they supported Amber, but they wouldn’t go against the grain.

Johnny claims he doesn’t get out very often. He says his few friends will invite him out for dinner, and he cautions them that his presence may bring unwanted attention.

I can be isolated and happier than a clam… But I don’t get out much. I’m stuck with my thoughts; just thinking, writing or watching weird s— on YouTube. It can’t be healthy.

Either way, he has a few projects in the works. One includes a return as everyone’s favorite dreadlocked day-drinking pirate, Jack Sparrow. We’re just happy that this 21 Jump Street old guard alum will be making an acting comeback.
