After two years and some change after a contentious legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp has found time to return to Hollywood. His new film Modi -Three Days on the Wings of Madness, starring Al Pacino and John Wick: Chapter 2 actor Riccardo Scamarcio in the lead role, will premiere at the Rome Film Festival in the Auditorium Parco della Musica. Depp is set to receive an honor in tribute to his acting career at the same venue.

27 Years Since Johnny Depp’s Last Directed Movie

The chameleon actor Johnny Depp, who is often the star of movies with his name attached, is taking a backseat for his new film Modi. Based on the historical play Modigliani by Dennis McIntyre, Modi details 72 hours in the life of renowned Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani during World War I in Paris. Modi is Johnny Depp’s second feature film as director after his 1997 neo-western film The Brave that he starred in alongside acting legends Marlon Brando and Luis Guzman.

The film, per a report from MovieWeb, was financed primarily from $2 million of Depp’s finances from past projects. It was released in theaters and on DVD internationally, except the United States, which explains why the film isn’t as well known in the country. Riccardo Scarnarcio will play the lead role of Amedeo Modigliani.

As mentioned, Depp’s Donnie Brasco co-star Al Pacino also stars in the film and plays the role of Maurice Gangnat- a noted international art collector. Pacino’s costars include Stephen Graham (The Irishman), Bruno Gouery (The White Lotus), Ryan McParland (Halo), and Sally Phillips (Austin, Bridget Jones’s Baby). The film will debut during the mid-October run of the Rome Film Festival from October 16 to October 27.

Johnny Depp’s Career Honor + Mixed Reception on Social Media

With a storied career spanning over 30 years, Depp is also due to receive a lifetime achievement award from the same Rome Festival in tribute to his work. Modi will be one of Johnny Depp’s first big projects in two years since he was caught in a heated legal battle with actress and ex-wife Amber Heard. After being accused of domestic abuse by the Aquaman star, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor sued her for defamation.

While Heard won $2 million in compensatory damages in a counter-claim against him, Depp won the case overall and went home with $15 million from the jury for “compensatory and punitive damages.” A great divide arose when Variety reported news of his new film and awaited the award. Many were against him being awarded after what transpired, and others were glad to see him come out of the courtroom conflict with the distinct boon. Twitter/X user @magpie839 wrote, “We were told he was ‘canceled,’ failing up.”

Final Thoughts

Regardless of your overall opinion of Johnny Depp, it seemed inevitable that he would win an award like this. A historical film Modi sounds like it’s just the right material for him to ease back into filmmaking. While the reception for this film has yet to be determined, a directing career could be the right move for Depp to avoid the public scrutiny that an actor with his star power brings.
