Jim Carrey on Returning for Sonic 3: “I get to play a genius”

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey’s next movie is Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The post-credits scene to its predecessor, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, indicated that there was a sequel on the way, but Carrey had said that would be his final film. He was, at the time, “fairly serious” about retiring from acting. Obviously, that’s not true, as Carrey is back in Sonic 3 and is actually playing two characters. Here’s what he said about his apparent about-face.

Jim Carrey Shunned Retirement for Sonic 3

Jim Carrey was asked why he decided to return. When he initially said he was stepping away, he provided one doorway back. He would return “if the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink.” Of course, that prompted questions over whether or not the Sonic 3 script was that good (early reviews indicate that it’s at least a good step up from the first two films).

Carrey clarified with a laugh, “That might’ve been hyperbole, yeah. I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.” Dr. Robotnik, or Eggman, is the main villain in the first two films in the franchise. He will be playing Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, who will team up with Shadow the Hedgehog to defeat Team Sonic and rule the world.

Jim Carrey Walks Back Retirement Talk

Jim Carrey is 62 years old, and he’s starred in a lot of films. As he said, he was somewhat legitimately considering walking away entirely. He stayed true to that between Sonic 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, as he didn’t appear in anything else. However, he made clear what he’d do moving forward.

The Dumb and Dumber star told Us Weekly, “I think I’ve decided not to retire, but to have power rests. I meditate a lot.” He also said, “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough,” he said. “I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

Legendary Actor Reveals One Movie He’d Return To Again

Aside from the Sonic the Hedgehog films, Jim Carrey doesn’t do a ton of sequels. He’s not immune to them, but they’re few and far between. One film he wouldn’t mind revisiting for a sequel is How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Carrey’s iconic turn as the green menace in the early 2000s still holds up as a holiday classic, and he’s open to doing it again.

He did stipulate that it was incredibly difficult to get dressed up with costumes and makeup to look like the Grinch. “The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.'” he said. “And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”

Gotta Go Fast

It’s a good thing Jim Carrey isn’t stepping away from acting. For one thing, he’s one of the world’s greatest comedy actors and a true talent. To lose him at 62 when many actors act into their latter years would be a shame. Secondly, he’s one of the best parts of this franchise. Carrey carried, pun intended, the first film on his back, and he was quite good in the second, too. With Shadow’s arrival, he might not have to do as much heavy lifting, but he’s still likely to be one of the most memorable characters.
