Jaws Swims Home for Monumental 50th Anniversary Celebration

Jaws 50th Anniversary

If someone asks you about shark movies, what does your mind immediately think of? Sharknado, Shark Tale, The Meg, and Deep Blue Sea are some obvious choices. But the one that reigns supreme above them all is Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, Jaws. It’s the feature that sets the standard for all shark-centric films that premiered afterward. This flick entertained and terrorized viewers for decades, becoming a pillar in the industry. And this year, it gets to celebrate its 50th anniversary like a hometown hero.

Recapping a Sharktoothed Masterpiece

For people unfamiliar with Jaws, it’s a movie about a great white shark. The predatory fish prowls the shores of a fictional coastal town dubbed Amity Island. After it kills a young woman, the new police chief considers closing the beach. The mayor, however, vetoes it since the arrangements would disrupt their Fourth of July tourism. A visitor is claimed by the shark, prompting amateur hunters to flood the town. The chief must now take matters into his own hands to prevent further unwanted deaths.

Today officially marks the 50th anniversary of when Jaws first chomped its way into theaters. To commemorate this occasion, Martha’s Vineyard, the original filming site, is hosting some special events. Such happenings include a documentary screening, a mesmerizing musical performance, and a museum exhibition. There will also be gatherings featuring special guests with intriguing behind-the-scenes tales. And, of course, local businesses are joining the party with some exclusive services and products. It looks like a celebration any Jaws fan would love to sink their teeth into.

Final Thoughts

I recall first seeing Jaws as a child after it came out on video. Though I cannot say I was a fan since sharks weren’t my thing back then. I re-watched the killer animal flick years ago and found it quite enjoyable. As for the anniversary celebrations happening in Martha’s Vineyard, they sound amazing! They make me wish I could experience this town-wide tribute in person. Happy 50th anniversary to Jaws, and here’s to countless more years to come!
