We heard the rumors and read the glowing descriptions out of CinemaCon. Now, James Gunn has finally released the first public footage for Clayface. This highly anticipated project takes a sharp turn from standard superhero stories. Instead, it dives straight into pure horror, giving fans a fresh take on a classic Batman rogue.

A Gritty New Vision of Gotham City In Clayface

The biggest takeaway from this new trailer is our very first look at Gotham City in Gunn’s unified DC Universe. This version of Gotham feels thick with dread. Dark alleys, towering gothic buildings, and a heavy, constant rain set a grim mood right from the opening shot. You can instantly tell this city hides terrible secrets. It provides the absolute perfect backdrop for a dark monster movie. We finally see a Gotham that feels dangerous and alive, setting a high bar for future Batman stories in this universe.

The Tragic Transformation of Basil Karlo

The footage gives us a chilling look at Basil Karlo. He is a desperate actor willing to do anything to hold onto his fading fame. We see quick, unsettling flashes of his tragic downfall. Then, the trailer shows his terrifying transformation into the iconic villain known as Clayface.

The visual effects blend seamlessly to create a monstrous, shape-shifting creature. It looks genuinely scary. The movie leans heavily into body horror, showing the physical and mental toll the change takes on Karlo. You do not just see a bad guy forming; you watch a man lose his humanity. The tone feels heavy, emotional, and genuinely frightening.

Setting the Stage for the New DCU

Releasing a true horror film shows exactly how Gunn plans to build this new universe. He wants creators to explore different genres while playing in the same massive sandbox. By starting the Gotham lore with a terrifying, character-driven monster story rather than a massive action event, the DCU proves it will take bold risks.

This trailer tells us that the new DC movie universe will not force every film to look and sound exactly the same. We cannot wait to see how this dark chapter unfolds. If this first look gives us any hint, Clayface will bring a terrifying and brilliant edge to comic book movies.
