Jai Courtney has been doing the press tour to promote his new survival horror movie, Dangerous Animals. He plays an eccentric boat captain who turns out to be a serial killer who feeds his victims to the sharks. Courtney has been known for playing some eccentric characters. One of those is DC Comics villain Captain Boomerang. He played the characters in 2016’s Suicide Squad and then reprised his role in James Gunn’s remake in 2021. When asked whether he would want to return to the character again, he was on board.
Jai Courtney Wants To Return As Captain Boomerang
In an interview with Screen Rant, Jai Courtney was asked not only about playing Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang but also about other comic book characters in the DC universe. He made it clear that no conversations had been had, but if asked, he would return in a heartbeat.
Screen Rant: I mentioned Boomerang. You were in the headlines recently where you said that James might’ve not closed the door completely.
Jai Courtney: You can’t say anything these days. I actually should have bit my tongue because, by the way, James hasn’t said anything to me about anything, so that might’ve been a bit of clickbait. But, listen, all I’ve ever said is if someone called, I’ll show up and do that role again.
Screen Rant: Is it only for Boomerang though, or are you open to other roles in the DC world?
Jai Courtney: I mean, sure, whatever. I’m open to anything. We can always have a conversation. But I think where that’s coming from is, like, that’s just a role that I loved playing, and it was sad to give him up. So if there’s any more mileage to milk out of it, I’m your guy.
The fact that he has worked with Gunn already is a step in the right direction, but it remains to be seen what direction the director wants to take the DCU.
DCU Future
We will get a good idea of the viability of the future of the DCU in about a month when Superman releases. The reaction to the trailers has been positive, but a lot is riding on Gunn’s first film in the revamped cinematic universe. This feels like the last chance for the movie universe to work. If this one fails, there have simply been too many reboots.
The good news is that James Gunn has shown he can make movies people like. His Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is critically acclaimed, and his Creature Commandos animated series was also met with positive reviews. If the universe grows and more movies get made, it would not surprise me if they wanted to bring actors like Jai Courtney back into the fold.
