Inside Out 2: The Success Behind the Emotions

Inside Out 2 breaks $1 billion at overseas box office

The billion-dollar success of Inside Out 2 has created a massive buzz online. The film introduced 13-year-old Riley to new emotions, friends, and lessons to start learning. After the initial release of Inside Out almost nine years ago, fans were excited by the fresh and relatable story. Parents and children alike were able to find something they loved about the film, hence the creation of the second one. Here’s everything you need to know about Inside Out 2.

Original Success

Inside Out, directed by Pete Docter, originally hit theaters on June 19th, 2015. The film follows an 11-year-old midwestern girl who loves to play hockey; however, as she inches closer to her teenage years, she finds that her emotions are getting harder and harder to navigate as the family prepares for a move. It is up to Riley’s emotions, led by Joy (Amy Poehler), to get her through this tough life event. Unfortunately, joy and sadness are removed from Riley’s available emotions, leaving her with fear, anger, and disgust. These are emotions that are heightened during puberty.

The storyline differs from the sequel because this is just the beginning of her emotional journey, which is an installment that introduces us to the world of animated emotions. Inside Out gave an insight into the perspective of a young girl which helped parents and children better understand what they were feeling. The first installment was a massive box office hit, accumulating over 850 million dollars. A success like Inside Out made it very clear that whatever the studios were doing was responding well to audiences and needed to be done at a bigger level. So that’s what they did.

The Sequel

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures hit the ground running with Inside Out 2 after the first installment’s initial success. While still following the same characters, the second installment has shown its originality and separates itself from the first. The animated sequel was directed by Kelsey Mann and brought back the original cast alongside some new friends, emotions, and challenges. Riley is now 13 and fully amidst puberty and the feelings of new emotions she isn’t used to. Riley attempts to adapt to her awkward teenage years, while her old emotions are trying to come to terms with being replaced. The movie exploded with success at the box office, smashing their first installment record.

Audience reactions were nothing but positive; one IMDB reviewer by the name of Poseyfan said, “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but this is one of the best Pixar movies to date. I did not expect to like this movie very much… Inside Out 2 rivals Pixar’s best movies like Up, Monsters Inc., Ratatouille, The Incredibles, and Toy Story in quality. The story was very moving. The best-animated movies ever made appeal not just to children but resonate with the more mature audience as well. And that’s what this movie does.” This encapsulates a huge majority of reviews, leaving the studios with one option and one option only. Make a third one, which, yes, is already in production.

Differences

Some of the major differences between the installments come from the interactions between emotions and family dynamics. In the first movie, the emotional reaction is between Joy and Sadness, as the plot surrounds Riley going through a move with her family. Joy and Sadness have to learn to accept each other to reestablish balance for Riley. Both Joy and Sadness are necessary for Riley to grow up healthy. It’s all about balance. In the second installment, all the emotions are put to the test as they face the possibility of being replaced during Riley’s puberty transformation by anxiety. This out-of-control emotion is wreaking havoc on Riley’s life.

It is up to all the original emotions to save Riley’s core memories before she loses her best friends and a chance to play on her favorite hockey team. A huge factor in the differences of the films comes from the age Riley is at. She was 11 years old in the first movie and 13 in the sequel. Both those times are integral parts of growing up, however, each complex situation needs to be treated and dealt with differently due to the different emotions at play.

Final Thoughts

Walt Disney Studio fans can anticipate the Inside Out franchise to continue for many years down the line. With over 2.4 billion dollars in revenue worldwide, Inside Out has become one of the largest and most successful Disney animation films ever produced. Inside Out 2 ranks number four on the list of highest-grossing Disney films, with Avengers: End Game at number one. Fans can also stream Inside Out and Inside Out 2 on Disney Plus sometime in September.
