The Walt Disney Company has a way with film. In 1937, Walt released the first feature-length animated film. Almost 100 years later, they are still paving the way by having the first animated film to reach the $1 billion mark at the international box office. Although there are 12 other films for which Disney has totaled over $1 billion, it’s been done with the addition of domestic box office totals. Inside Out 2, did it without the domestic total added in.

Inside Out was already a great film. It was an extremely unique film where the main characters weren’t people, but emotions inside of a person. More than that, it just followed the five main emotions of joy, fear, anger, disgust, and sadness as they figured out how to handle a child’s first big move from the Midwest to the bustling city of San Francisco.
The second iteration, Inside Out 2, revolves around the same child, Riley, who is now older and is now going through puberty. Some new emotions make their debut. Ennui, embarrassment, and envy enter Riley’s emotional headquarters, but they all answer to anxiety. The original gang then has to work to find their place in Riley’s life and stop being suppressed.
The Finances
Inside Out 1 did very well at the box office on all accounts. Per the numbers, it earned over $850 million at the box office. Of that, a little over $356 million was domestic. Meaning it already performed well on an international stage. Then there was an additional $122 million made from the home market, which, notably, doesn’t include the additional earnings from the streaming service.
Inside Out 2 did even better at the box office. The numbers report a little over $646 million at the domestic box office. The international box office shows over $1 billion, making it the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
Why Does It Matter?
After so many negative headlines worldwide and the constant negativity of the news cycle, this is the kind of record-breaking we can all support. But the biggest question that people will ask after a report like this is: Why does it matter? Quite frankly, movies can’t be made without a budget. Budgets only get approved when there is reason to believe the film will make money. When any movie makes money, that means more films like it will be made. Anytime a good movie makes money, it makes audiences happy because it means more good ones will be made.
From a sociological perspective, it means two main things: First, animation is growing on a global scale, which is good news. More importantly, humanity connects on a much deeper level. The message of the movie connects with people outside of just an American audience. It’s always amazing when things bring people together and money talks. It says that we all go through puberty and have complex emotions.

At the end of the day, movie fans want more awesome movies. The best way to guarantee that is to vote with your dollar. If there is a movie that you see and you like, do what you can to support it. On top of that, it’s okay to like any kind of film. $1 billion in earnings on a global scale shows that there is a huge audience for this kind of film.
