Independent Gems: Must-Watch Indie Films of the Year

Indie films are usually the most unique films for the viewing experience. More mainstream films are lacking compared to indie films in a sense of relatability. While not all indie films are grounded in reality, they still convey a message that the average viewer can relate to. Indie films also don’t hold back from looking at societal problems that most mainstream films won’t dare to touch. Regardless of the plot of an indie film, there is something about the low-budget, almost do-it-yourself feel that makes them so enjoyable.

Anora

Sean Baker is one of the most affluent independent filmmakers of this generation. His new film, ‘Anora,’ set to hit theaters on October 17th, follows Ani, played by Mickey Madison, a young sex worker from Brooklyn who meets and quickly marries one of her customers. His name is Ivan, and he is played by Mark Eidelshtein, the son of an oligarch. Swept up into the glamorous world of wealth, her dream life is soon threatened when the news of the marriage reaches Ivan’s family in Russia, who soon come to New York to have their marriage annulled.

I Saw the TV Glow

In 2021, Jane Schoenburn directed the indie film hit ‘We’re All Going to the Worlds Fair’ and has now produced their second indie hit, ‘I Saw the TV Glow.’ This unique viewing experience is inspired by children’s horror media of the past. Owen, played by Justice Smith, is introduced to the mysterious late-night TV show The Pink Opaque by classmate Maddy, played by Brigette Lundy-Paine. The two bond over the show, but when Maddy mysteriously goes missing, The Pink Opaque is abruptly canceled soon after, and Owen begins to lose grasp on what’s real and what’s on TV. ‘I Saw the TV Glow’ is available to stream on MAX.

Kneecap

The first Irish-language film to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, Kneecap, directed by Richard Peppiatti, is the untold story of the Irish-language rap trio Kneecap and their creation and dedication to saving Ireland’s native language. Belfast school teacher JJ played by DJ Próvai, finds himself tied up with self-proclaimed “low life scum” Naoise and Liam Óg, played by Móglaí Bap and Mo Chara, where they soon create a rap trio like no other. They rap in their native tongue and stand up to save the Irish language. Kneecap is currently playing in select theaters.

Dìdi

Directed and written by Sean Wang, Didi follows 13-year-old Chris Wang, played by Izaac Wang, a Tawainese American boy who is in his last month of summer vacation before he starts high school. He learns the crucial lessons of how to skate, how to flirt, and most importantly, how to love your mom.

The film takes place in the summer of 2008, a time that those in their mid-20s and early 30s remember all too well. Dìdi is a nostalgic look at growing up in the earlier days of social media and a look back on the importance of the lessons we learned then. Dìdi is currently playing in select theaters.

Hard Truths

Set to hit theaters on October 5th, Hard Truths follows Pansy, played by Marianne Jean-Baptiste, a woman who is so tormented by her depression and anger that it causes her to become hyper-sensitive and ready to fly off the handle. Criticizing her husband and son a lot, she starts fights with strangers and is ready to discuss the world’s countless flaws with anyone who will listen to her. The only person who is sympathetic to her is her cheerful sister, Chantal, played by Michele Austin. Written and directed by Mike Leigh, Hard Truths is a look into our modern world and struggles, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of humans.

Exhibiting Forgiveness

In his directorial debut, Titus Kaphar’s Exhibiting Forgiveness, which he also wrote, is a raw look at the struggles of forgiving those who have hurt us and forgetting the things that hold us back. André Holland plays Tarell, an upcoming black artist who utilizes his artistic talent in his painting, to find freedom from his past. His path to success is derailed by an unexpected visit from his father, La’Ron, played by John Earl Jelks, a recovering addict who is desperate to reconcile with his son. Exhibiting Forgiveness will be in theaters on October 18th.

Final Thoughts on 2024 Indie Films

These are just a few indie films from this year that are currently streaming or will be available to see in theaters, too. While one might be inclined to check out whatever blockbuster hit is currently playing, try seeking out an independent film for your next movie night. To make it more fun, see if your area is hosting a film festival for one of these indie films.
