Shah Rukh Khan was one of the many first-timers who appeared at The Met Gala. The event takes place every spring in New York at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. It’s a huge charity event to benefit the Costume Institute there. The Met is known for helping to raise a ton of money, serving amazing food, and, of course, having fashion on full display. In the 77 years it’s gone on, this year was one of the highest grossing fundraisers they have ever had.
The Met’s Annual Theme
Each year the Met Gala has a theme for its dress. 2025 has been a year to focus on men’s fashion. This year the exhibition’s theme is entitled Superfine: Tailoring Black Style and features elements from Black Dandyism. The focus is to celebrate men’s fashion over the years in relation to diversity and cultural heritage; the emphasis being on people of color – and their rich history.
The Met attracts people around the world, and this is certainly no exception for Bollywood celebrities. A few this year made their debut on the red, er, actually blue carpet. Let’s check out how that went!
Shah Rukh Khan and Bollywood
Bollywood is the east’s answer to Hollywood. A portmanteau of Bombay (now Mumbai) and Hollywood, Bollywood is the highly successful film industry in India. Many stars have been made there – and sadly, only a few are known in the U.S.
Excellent Indian made films like The Namesake, Devdas, and Tanu Weds Manu Returns only get a little notoriety here in the states. Suraj Sharma, Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, and the late Irrfan Khan are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the talent India has. One of their most prominent actors is Shah Rukh Khan.
Shah Rukh Khan, or SRK, has had a long history in Bollywood. He has starred in over 100 films, has his own production company, and is one of the most widely recognized faces in India. Shah Rukh Khan, along with fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, attended the Met Gala this year.
What Happened at The Met?
Out of the hundreds of attendees, only a small percentage get their time on the blue carpet. Shah Rukh Khan was able to get his. Vogue, one of the biggest publications covering this year’s gala had a couple hosts who spoke with SRK. Clearly, the women were not aware of his star power in India. Shah Rukh Khan was able to greet them, make a couple remarks, and be gracious enough to realize not everyone may know who he is.

By having more celebrities from around the world travel and attend large events (such as conventions or galas), it not only solidifies who they are, but also aligns the film industry. Having a successful celebrity like Shah Rukh Khan attend The Met and make a statement, not just fashion, but culture as well, is good for everyone.
