House of the Dragon: 3 Good Reasons Why You Should be Team Black

200 years before Daenerys Targaryen and her battle for the Iron Throne, there was Rhaenyra Targaryen. In the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra is the heir to the Seven Kingdoms and must fight back when her brother steals her throne. The Targaryen family is split into two groups: the Blacks and the Greens. Queen Rhaenyra is Black. The usurper and her brother, Aegon, are Green.

The recent trailers for the highly anticipated second season were separated into Black and Green trailers, showing the conflict from both points of view. Since then, fans have pledged their allegiance to their favorite monarch, but there’s only one right answer.  If you’re on Team Green, it’s time to change sides.

Rhaenyra is the Princess of Dragonstone. Thank You Very Much.

At the time, Rhaenyra is named the Princess of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne; she is the only living child of her father, King Viserys Targaryen I. After her mother and brother passed away in childbirth, Viserys marries Rhaenyra’s childhood best friend, Alicent Hightower, who gives birth to Aegon. Despite everyone expecting him to simply because he is a boy, the king never names Aegon heir.

Rhaenyra’s status as the oldest sibling makes her the rightful heir, and the fact that before he died, Viserys never changed his mind about her ruling after him. Her opponents say she can’t lead the Seven Kingdoms because she’s a woman, but her father didn’t treat her differently and trusted her with all the responsibilities of the heir.

Even an ancient secret her brother and uncle, the assumed hecollider.com/who-are-the-greens-and-blacks-house-of-the-dragonir before Rhaenyra and Aegon came along, don’t know. Viserys never had faith in anyone but Rhaenyra. If that doesn’t make her the rightful queen, what does?

Aegon Doesn’t Want to Be King

Aegon’s mother and grandfather Otto, King Viserys’s former advisor, are the prince’s biggest supporters. Too bad he doesn’t want their support. When the king was alive, Alicent and Otto always tried to put Aegon ahead of Rhaenyra, but he was only interested in lazing around the palace and taking advantage of servant girls.

He shows that he doesn’t care about the throne and says that his father had 20 years to make him Prince of Dragonstone instead of his sister, but he didn’t. He has no desire to be responsible for the Seven Kingdoms, and when Alicent and Otto rush to make him king after Viserys’s death, he’s nowhere to be found. When the guards and his younger brother finally track him down, he tries to run from them.

It’s only when he’s in front of a crowd wearing the crown that he looks happy, but he doesn’t really want to deal with the pressures that come with being king. It’s unclear if he even knows anything about running a kingdom since he hasn’t expressed an interest in politics like his older sister did at his age.

Rhaenyra is Peaceful

Queen Rhaenyra tries to stop the war, called Dance of the Dragons before it even begins. She and Alicent have grown apart, so Rhaenyra suggests that her oldest son and Alicent’s only daughter get married to bring the two branches of the house together. At that moment, she wanted to stop any future conflict and be more of a family, but Alicent rejected the idea.

She prefers conversation instead of conflict, which we see early in season 1 when she steps into a tense situation involving her uncle and a stolen dragon’s egg. Rhaenyra just talks to him and tells him that stealing the egg won’t make him the heir he hopes, and he gives it back to her. She loves her family and doesn’t want to hurt any of them, while Aegon and the Greens contemplate assassinating her after Viserys’s death.

Rhaenyra Targaryen is the true queen of the Seven Kingdoms. She’s kind, knowledgeable, and born to rule. In the face of adversity, she doesn’t let anyone use her gender to hold her back. She’s a symbol of women’s strength. Are you Team Black yet?
