John Cena and Idris Elba headline ‘Heads of State’, a political action comedy that plunges two unlikely heroes, Sam Clarke, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom who is also a former SAS-trained commando, and actor turned President of the United States of America, Will Derringer, into a world of international conspiracy. Cena and Elba face daunting threats, edge-of-your-seat action, and fiery banter. With their star power and undeniable chemistry, this movie blends high-octane sequences and political stakes, and comedy into a must-watch film.
The Premise of the Film
We follow Clarke (Elba), the UK Prime Minister, and Derringer (Cena), the US President, two rivals who publicly don’t get along. When Air Force One is attacked over enemy lines, they must put aside their differences to stop a global conspiracy that not only threatens the free world but also what they each stand for as leaders. They each face a trial of their own while trying to influence one another to be better politicians. In Clarke’s case, loosen up a little and enjoy life a bit more, while in Derringer’s case, he could show a bit more of a political side rather than use his power as an ex-action star to gain respect from others.
The “Buddy” Back in Movies
Watching ‘Heads of State‘ was an event, but it wasn’t super over the top like some action comedies would be. The laugh hit the right spots, and the explosions with gunplay made the audience want more. If anything, it took me back to the days of the “Buddy” action-comedy movies, where two guys don’t get along, but by the end of the film, they respect each other. This movie is exactly that, as Clarke and Derringer don’t get along to begin with, but this works for their chemistry as you start to feel their friendship grow throughout the movie. By the end of the film, we are left wondering what’s next for our heroes in that world.
A Cast That Follows Their Leaders
John Cena and Idris Elba are not the only ones who are standing out in the film. Priyanka Chopra plays Noel Bisset, a senior MI6 agent who is tasked not only to protect both leaders but is also the love interest of Clarke, being that they have a history together.
Another person who honestly steals the movie is Marty Comer, played by Jack Quaid, who is not only a fan boy of Derringer, but a trained US agent who protects both leaders when they reach the safe house, giving off an explosive defense. The only person who doesn’t really do much for the story is VP Elizabeth Kirk, played by Carla Gugino. You can tell that she has something to do with trying to get rid of Cena and Elba’s characters, it’s obvious, but it doesn’t really affect the movie that much.
If you need a break from real-life politics, this movie is one to look forward to. You’ll have fun watching two action stars play off each other, along with a cast to back them up. This stars John Cena, Idris Elba, Priyanka Chopra, Carla Gugino, Stephen Root, Jack Quaid, Paddy Considine, Sarah Niles, Katrina Durden, and Richard Coyle. You can watch it on Amazon Prime starting July 2nd.
