Former film producer Harvey Weinstein had a health scare on Sunday evening. Officials rushed the incarcerated entertainment magnate to the hospital when they discovered his heart issue. Weinstein was in prison following his appeal on the rape allegations made against him. Thankfully, he got the surgery on Monday and is being monitored for updates on his health.
Details On Harvey Weinstein’s Emergency Surgery
Harvey Weinstein was rushed from Rikers Island in New York to the hospital on Sunday, September 8. The 72-year-old former Oscar-winning tycoon was taken to Bellevue on account of his multiple medical complications. He was quickly scheduled for an emergency heart surgery, which he underwent on Monday. According to his representatives, Craig Rothfeld and Juda Engelmayer, Weinstein has been plagued by several health issues; he was hospitalized for COVID-19 and pneumonia in both lungs in July.
“As we have extensively stated before, Mr. Weinstein suffers a plethora of significant health issues that need ongoing treatment,” Harvey Weinstein’s reps said. “We are grateful to the executive team at the New York City Department of Correction and Rikers Island for acting swiftly in taking him to Bellevue Hospital.” Rothfield noted that his client is recovering in the ICU, and he is waiting for further updates.
Weinstein’s Legal Troubles
Harvey Weinstein’s emergency occurred just a few days before his retrial in a New York Court. He is set to appear over the rape and sexual assault allegations leveled against him. Weinstein received a 23-year prison sentence in 2020 for forcing his production assistant, Mimi Haley, to engage in oral sex in 2006. Weinstein was also accused of raping Jessica Mann, a hairstylist, in 2013; however, this conviction was overturned in April 2024.
The New York State Court of Appeals had determined that his original trial was unfair, as Weinstein’s trial judge allowed women with unrelated sexual assault and rape testimonies to witness against Weinstein. Actress and model Tarale Wulff testified that Harvey Weinstein raped her in 2005. Lauren Young said Weinstein masturbated in front of her and groped her in 2013. Meanwhile, actress Dawn Dunning stated that Weinstein put his hand up her skirt in 2004. The disgraced Hollywood producer has maintained that all his sexual relations were consensual.
His Continued Legal Troubles
Since the beginning of Harvey Weinstein’s trials, over 80 women have accused him of sexual assault. He also has another 16-year conviction, which was handed to him in Los Angeles, California. The 2022 conviction remains in force, and Weinstein will be extradited to California to serve his sentence.
Many have decried the appeal court’s decision to overturn the Miramax co-founder’s 2020 sentence. This includes Ashley Judd, who came out first to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment. Judd stated during a press conference that the decision was “unfair to survivors. This is what it’s like to be a woman in America, living with male entitlement to our bodies.” Lindsay Goldbrum, a representative for six women who testified against Weinstein, also told NBC News that the decision was a “leap backward for the rule of law” and said future sexual assault victims may be discouraged from speaking out. Prosecutors have disclosed that they will charge Harvey Weinstein again.
