Effective Guide To Reading Classics: How And What To Read

In literature, classic books refer to the works that have been impacting the reading scene for years on end now. Some of the first authors that might pop into your mind when hearing the word classics are William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Jane Austen, and many more. Their works are timeless and still hold value to them even after years or decades of publishing them. If you are one of the people who want to get into reading classics but feel disoriented and do not know what books to read or how to read them, this guide is for you!

How To Read Classic Books

The main reason people find classics intimidating is the language the authors used back then. Language changes and develops over time, and it is absolutely normal if one finds difficulty getting into classic writing at first. However, there are tips one could use to make their reading more accessible and enjoyable:

– Read annotated versions as they will make it easier for one to understand the context, authorial intent, or even the metaphors that might be hard to decode at first. Annotated versions of classics are as widely known and used as the non-annotated versions, so you will be able to find them anywhere online and in your libraries.

– Research the authors, the historical period in which the book was published, and the sociopolitical sphere at that time -if relevant- because literature always holds a piece of the author’s environment and the life they led back then. Knowing the authors’ background will oftentimes help you see the world through their eyes. You do not necessarily need to share the same perspective as them, but you will better grasp their ideas.

– Discuss them and read other people’s reviews and discussions of the book. The internet now has made it easier to do that as you are a few clicks away from reading millions of people’s thoughts and insights about a certain book. This can help you see things you missed the first time you read the book or introduce you to a new aspect of the work.

Classic Books That Are Beginner-Friendly

As you dive into classic literature, you will need to take it easy on yourself at first. Do not overwhelm yourself with heavy readings from the very beginning as they might shut you off from classics entirely. Familiarize yourself with the classic scene first, and as time goes by, you will master it. Here are three beginner-friendly classics you can start reading right now!

The Complete Short Stories By Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe is considered to be the father of modern detective stories. This short story collection will be a testament to his genius mind in stringing narratives. On top of that, you will be marveling at his writing style as he manages to capture dark concepts in a sensational, suspenseful, and immersive way. It is a perfect and simple introduction to classics.

The Death of Ivan Ilych By Leo Tolstoy

Ivan Ilych led a wonderful life. He checked all the marks he needed to: family, career, house. He reached a point in his life where he is convinced he has it all. However, as his health starts deteriorating and he finds himself on his deathbed, questions start creeping into him. Did he really live as he should?

Leo’s writing style is haunting! As you are reading, you’ll find yourself almost sensing how suddenly every aspect of Ivan’s life is plagued by an unbearable, dreadful, and drawn-out pain. And it’s already too late when he realizes that he wasted his life living life as other people believed he should. If you have been hesitant to approach Russian literature classics, this book could be your gate into it. Short, achingly beautiful, and memorable.

The Picture of Dorian Gray By Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde is one of the pioneers of classics in English literature. In this book, the reader is struck by unprecedented vanity, selfishness, and sadistic cruelty. Dorian Gray is a handsome young man, and he would do anything to preserve his beauty. He would even sell his soul. He comes across Lord Henry who believes life is only worth living if it constantly consists of selfish indulgence. Dorian Gray takes that notion as his motto in life.

This book has one of the most interesting dialogues in all of the classic books I’ve read. I was honestly baffled at the characters’ ideas and choices, but I still found them worth discussing. It was my introduction to morally gray characters, and I never looked back ever since! It is an easy and captivating read and encapsulates perfectly why classics are important to read.

Reading should be enjoyable as there is something for everyone, and I believe that’s the beauty of literature. However, it is also important to challenge oneself from time to time and step into new territory, be it new authors, genres, or languages. Classics are considered to be masterpieces for a reason, and it would be tragic if you miss an absolutely gorgeous piece merely for not knowing how to navigate it. Yes, it takes a little bit of adjustment, but it is extremely rewarding! Step by step, delve into the realm of classics as it is wondrous and can change your perspective of literature entirely.
