Glen Powell Remembers “Great Friend” Bill Paxton As ‘Twisters’ Releases

In a recent social media post, Glen Powell paid tribute to the late Bill Paxton for his role in the original Twister film. Paxton, who starred in Twister (1996), passed away in 2017 after complications from a stroke. Powell’s role in the new Twisters movie is similar to that of Paxton’s original role; however, it is important to note that the new film is not a remake of the original. Rather, it has been lovingly referred to as a sequel of sorts, existing within the same universe with entirely new characters and plot. To see what Powell had to say about his former Red Wing co-star, continue reading below!

Before the release of Twisters, Glen Powell took to social media to honor Bill Paxton’s contributions to the original film, posting a photo along with the caption, “As we release Twisters into the world today, I just wanted to look up and tip my hat to the legend that is Bill Paxton. A great friend of mine saw poetry in the natural world. His boots are impossible to fill, but this life is all about chasing the greats.” Click here to see the photo!

Powell and Paxton starred together in Red Wing, released in 2013. The Western film chronicles the life of a young boy in a small town in Texas who is taken in by a couple and goes to live on their farm. As the boy grows up, the father suspects his wife begins to have feelings for the orphan, who has grown into quite a handsome young man. Red Wing is free to stream on Tubi and is also available on Peacock. Paxton died in 2017. One of his last on-screen performances was in the series Training Day, which he starred in for thirteen episodes.

A Movie Spanning Multiple Generations

Paxton’s real-life son has a cameo in the current Twisters film, described as a “standalone sequel” to the original. James Paxton told Entertainment Weekly, “I did this one for Dad,” before adding that it took him some time to process his involvement in the sequel, admitting he was unsure if he wanted to be a part of it at first.

Paxton went on to detail what eventually made him agree to the role, telling the publication, “Just given the context of my dad and his significance in the original and him not being here, it’s an emotional thing. It wasn’t something that I could really decide immediately. It took a little time just to process it, just the magnitude of it. Ultimately, it ended up feeling like the right thing to do, to be representative of Dad there.”

The New Twisters Film

The new release follows a group of ambitious storm chasers who attempt to track and record tornadoes in Oklahoma. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones opposite Powell, along with performances by Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane. Glen Powell is known for his work on films like Set It Up, Top Gun: Maverick, and Anyone But You, while Daisy Edgar-Jones is best known for her roles in Normal People, Where the Crawdads Sing, and Under the Banner of Heaven.
